You Should Be Playing Overcooked on the Switch

Overcooked

There are few games that fly completely under my radar, despite having a small part of my brain that knows of their existence. Overcooked, the hilariously eccentric and chaotic cooking arcade game is one such title.  Ghost Town Games and Team17 have crafted an irreverent masterpiece, but it’s not without its issues on the new Nintendo Switch. There are significant problems with frame rates at times, some shoddy rumble support, and no online play. But as a local-coop riot-fest? It’s hard to beat. You should definitely be playing Overcooked: Special Edition on the Switch.

Ghost Town Games’ opus can be a solo affair, with the player controlling 2 cooks at a time, but I’ll be honest – it’s just not very fun. The action is hard to keep straight as you have to keep swapping between the two cooks, and in the end, you just won’t get very much enjoyment unless you’re playing Overcooked with friends and family.  It’s designed from the ground up to be a game you sit on the couch and play with your friends. You’ll yell, laugh, and probably cry when your wife or son (or you) drops the ball on a tricky recipe and the level needs to be attempted again.

Overcooked

It’s just a shame that the FPS issues are so prevalent. This is a system that has no qualms running The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Overcooked’s look is charming and fresh, but it’s definitely not a taxing game on any system. In a game that requires so much precision, it’s maddening. In addition, the rumble is just a bit off, but nothing a patch won’t fix. Your actions register rumbles, but they also then make the controllers of your friends’ rumble too. So it gets to be a little “shaky” when you’re all going and sharing rumble.

Overcooked

There are over 40 levels to be played in the main campaign, and if you fly through them without failing, I’ll be amazed. The Festive Seasoning DLC is included, as is The Lost Morsel, adding even more content to really test your communication and execution skills. Simply put, Overcooked is a great game on any platform, and one with a couple glaring issues that need to be patched on the Switch. Still, there are few games on Switch that are this well-suited to co-op play, so at $20, it’s worth the price of admission if you’ve got the friends to bring along for the ride.
