Game hopping since 2003. |
People just wanna get on with it, whats wrong with that? OB players that havent pre-ordered have just a few days to try the game. Why spend it stood still chatting on OOC? A very narrow excuse to whine imho. |

and so continues the era of shallow, mainstream mmorpgs |
i am looking forward to war, but games like war and wow do not help to achieve a sense of community, everyone is doing their own thing..its a selfish world. things like player cities promote communities but most developers dont see this, they want the quick buck..fast food gameplay is what we get these days..if anyone here played swg pre-cu and went into a cantina, you will understand what im getting at. |

I played CB and it was good. I played PW and it was good. This weekend was horrible communitywise to me. Not to slam the wow players,as it is a fine game and the community is representative of the general public. Never the less, the behaviour this past weekend annoyed me to the point where I cancelled my preorder. I am not looking back. Many people are going to love this game. It has a lot going for it. PQs are a great feature and the world is dark (imo). The devs are working to make things better and to complete the unfinished areas. |

I'll have to check back with you after release to see if things change. For myself, I always turn off general chat because all the "your mother" inanity spoils the suspension of disbelieve and immersion I am looking for in an MMORPG. For me community is my guild and what we can accomplish as a team. Most of our chatter is in Ventrilo.
Quoted for truth! I'm the same way. I only deal with my guild chat and ventrilo. |

The chat interface does need some work. It just isn't very predictable or intuative the way it works. Also like someone else mentioned the chat box gets croweded with many different types of messages sometimes. It would be helpful to add some filters. Something else I've noticed is that the general chat areas seem to be broken up in to many different areas per tier/location. It seems like I can't run for five minutes without leaving one channel and entering another. Maybe that was my imagination, but with very localized chat channels the people will be divided up making things seem even quieter. Luckily, the open group system is amazing and it isn't too hard to track down warbands most times. But local/general chat channels aren't all bad, sometimes they can be an entertaining diversion, and it's not good if the game feels like it's a single player game without your guild or party chat. |

I think chat channels are good to get a community going. Guild and other vehicles are great once you get going but if you log in and global chat is dead it is hard to contact people and get the ball rolling unless you come to the game with your own community. That said I'm pretty sure there are some problems with the chat servers. Yesterday I tried chatting and there was no traffic nothing at all. I tried asking if people could hear me, I even tried shouting. NOTHING at all. I can only assume that the chat system was broken or I'm playing with a lot of antisocial people. Or maybe I didn't say the right thing... Next time I'll say, War sucks and Wow rocks. If that doesn't get a response then the chat system would definitely be broken....

Which wont attract the big crowds.. it is the big crowds that cause this. Ever since WoW introduced many more people to MMORPG's weve gotten people who would never have considered them back in the early days... the early generation of mmorpgers were much more community focussed.
Now I sound like a miserable old sod. |
