Something about the games combat just seems alot better than others, by combat I mean the timing of hits and speed, I dont know how to explain it but in other mmorpgs I played lets take the newest one for example WAR it just feels as if combat is slow and sticky and timing for hits are just off, Ive been feeling this in many other mmorpgs to and the only ones ive yet to feel this in was WoW and to a extent AOC

Indeed, though it could just be that WoW has been out for so long, been patched so many times. Even EQ feels smooth, I think developers just need to work on smoothing combat out.

Nope. Had nothing to do with long age and patching. The smoothness of combat has been there from the start and was one of the things that got me into WoW in the first place.

Yep the smoothness has been there from the get go.  I highly doubt WAR will patch out if it's current combat feel.  The games either have it or they don't.

Combat feel for me:

1. World of Warcraft or Planetside (Although PS is just a FPS on large scale)

2. City of Heroes

AoC is the only newer game I haven't tried yet so I can not comment on it.  Most other main stream MMO's I have played and well the combat was not good enough.

I can understand the two styles people have with combat:

Tacticle only : DDO

Speed, Fluidity, and Tacticle : WoW

I will say much of the PvE in WoW can be pretty much auto attack if you choose to play that way.  But fighting things that are tougher than you or fighting multiple monsters at a  time brings in the tactics.  PvP of course if very tacticle, short of being completely out geared.

That's true, EQ felt smooth too. I can't understand how new MMO's can't feel smooth now.

I am convinced it is THE most important featue why Wow is popular.

The moment you don't get these "smooth - responsive- fast " actions in a new game, the game already lost its appeal after 5 minutes.

No one wants to play in the "old" clunky fights anymore.

Just go to a BG and fight with your melee class  (dual hand warrior or rogue) and see just how fast everything is moving. Then log in to War or AoC and compare. There is absolutely no discussion that these newer games don't even come close.

Designing a core PvP game with LESS smoothness and control in the fights is not good.

I agree with this post too, when I played GW I didn't like the combat that much because of the clunky movement and stiff feel to it.  It really bothered me, I just can't get used to that...

I thought AC had really smooth combat as well, perhaps this is the reason all current MMO's are failing...

The #1 thing that stops me looking at another MMO besides WoW is the combat, WoW's combat is so much more its hard to let go and settle for a lower form of combat.

I made this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=B9fqgHHDfNc video over a year ago and shows a hunter taking on a sucession of mobs both in melee and ranged.  I have yet to find a game where I can do this.

$oE , destroying MMO since 1999.

A lot depends on the timings it seems.

Just look at Unreal tournament and UT2003/2004, they both had perfect timings (for an FPS, not MMO). Now look at UT3 and it went all wrong.

Those timings are crucial in MMO. Not only for gameplay but also for the community. Make it too fast and no one has time to talk, make it too slow and people get bored.

In WoW when you flee an enemy, you can jump in the air, do a 360 spin and shoot the enemy with an instant attack while you were facing him.

Can't do that in many other MMOs.

It's one of the few combat moves that require a little practice.

Any kind of hitch or lag would ruin this move.

It is just you. Wows combat floats good but it ain't the only one, Guildwars combat floats very nice, AoC is not bad, EQ2 works fine...

Or maybe your computer sucks making all games a bit newer lagg?? That would get you the feeling. Some games the combat feels a bit off in, City of heroes did feel a bit off for one.
