Getting to rank 40 is very grindy, and that isn't even the real grind! The real grind begins at 40 when you start grinding for Renown Rank 80.

That said, I see no problem with you playing it casually. Just don't expect any meaningful progress at a decent speed after you reach tier 3.

One nice thing is, there is no real One Grind; you can choose to do quests, smack mobs, do PQs, do open world RvR, do scenarios, raid lairs, etc.  Quite a lot of options to choose from, more than most games, really.  Gives you a lot of choices for "what do I want to do right now?"
