You don''t stop playing cos you get old; you get old cos you stop playing.

HI,

Haven't played Vol1 for a few days but bought Vol 2 today.

I got the disc home and now I'm wondering what action to take regarding installing.

I click on the little gold ring that starts Vol1 and it needs to patch, but servers seem to be down at the moment. I put in the DVD install disc for Vol 2 but I get a message saying:

"The previously installed software is newer than the current software you are trying to install. Are you sure you want to continue?" (Should I be worried about this message btw?)

So what shall I do first? Wait for the update servers to be ready and patch Vol1 first, THEN install Vol2?

Or just go ahead and reply "Yes" to that question and install Vol2 anyway and patch after?

Thanks for any forthcoming help. Cheers.

And the results are in:
1st Lord of the Rings Online.
2nd World of Warcraft.

Lord of the Rings Online: The Balrog WILL kill you.

I think your best bet would be too uninstall Vol 1 completely, and reinstall everything from the discs

Er...that just sounds totally wrong.

I just wanted to know whether it's best to download the patch first THEN install Mines of Moria, or install Mines of Moria, then the patch.

Why the hell would I uninstall Vol 1 and start all over again?

And the results are in:
1st Lord of the Rings Online.
2nd World of Warcraft.

Install first, then patch.

If you patch first it may either patch thinking you don't have the expansion or it is going to download the entire vol 2.

Reason behind uninstalling vol 1 would be just so you have a fresh and clean client.  I wouldn't suggest it because it could result in longer patch times.

Oops,

I just downloaded the patch and then I'm gonna install the game.

I think it'll be ok.

If you have Volume 1 instaled then Install the Mines of Moria disc and then download the small (500 mb) patch. Then you are good to go :)

Thanks, it seems like I shoulda installed Vol 2 first, then any patches that followed.

In my impatience, I've decided to download all existing patches first, then I'm gonna install Vol 2. Then any more patches on top of that. Yeh, in retrospect I think I've been a bit silly.

2nd World of Warcraft.

How so? with reinstalling everything, you can guarantee Vol 1 will be up to date so you dont have to download any patches for it. And you will just have to download minor patches that came out recently.

I thought the patch *IS* MoM. Everyone has to install the patch (MoM), but to access the new content you have to enter the product key into your account. So we all have MoM installed, even if we didn't buy it... we just can't access the new content until entering the code. So no need to install your DVD (Vol 2 as you call it?).

Nothing to see here... please move along...

I downloaded the patch and played before I bought MoM - the loading screen when you launch was different, and the patch was certainly HUGE (probably took hours - I went to sleep), so I suspect that the patch itself was all of he MoM content.

But now that I bought MoM, I just decided to be safe, uninstall completely, and then reinstall from my new disks.  The patch was MUCH faster.

From a time-to-install perspetive, I think it's much smarter/quicker (in hindsight) to (1) uninstall, (2) install the new DVDs, and then (3) do minimum patching (15 minutes or less).
