why do humans build, because it isn''t there |
This is a survey from HERE and HERE that asks different communities what they looked for in games. The communities asked: Steam, authors own preferances, GM related communities, indie/developer communities, The escapist, Something Aweful, and face punch. Stuff from important play factors, devices, and favored genre. You also see some unexpected and completely expected results. all around awesome data and very interesting. The most amusing to me being the self proclaimed developer age range... I'm a statistical 'expected'.
SAMPLE (yes that means you're going to have click on the first link to get to the blog, second for a forum discusion elsewhere. If you don't care do so why are you bothering with the developers forum?).

Oh come on you have: favored genres, what people say is most important to them(graphics, gameplay, ect), the piracy rates they'll admit to, how much they'll pay for a game (seperated by traditional and casual), the type of game play, and a bunch of other stats. And to top it all off it's sorted by which online community/community type they come from.
It's a treasure trove of information and it doesn't even get a 'meh'. |

That when it comes to platforming 2D is prefered about as much as a 3D platforming game. That sports games while pretty popular even from RL experiance of seeing people, are not very well represented by online communities. That FacePunch has the highest preferance for sandbox games and also has a corrolation of their community have the most gameplay hours by a long shot and another corrolation of having an average age between 15 and 18. That people from 'developement' communities have a higher preferance than most for board games but still a low one. that GM related communities have the highest rate of 'admited' pure piracy. That from online communities the XBOX 360 has 2X as much market penetration. and the PS2 beats out PS3 in market penetration.
All and all I wish I could get these babies database you could do SOOOO much work with it. ___________________________-- edit: reply to post below. of course there's sample bias the results are based solely on what the guy could capture on various forums and online communitees. However if you take that sample bias into account you get a pretty nice picture of what that sample bias likes and plays.
