I have recently saw and heard from the numerous posts on this forum mainly that WAR isnt all it was hyped up to be. This brings me to the decision of weather or not I should get LOTRO or not. First off, I d like to say I remember playing the trial twice both were a blast but, my computer has been upgraded since then and was thinking about getting into LOTRO. Anyhow, the expansion has drawn more interest from me and I was wondering would now be a good time to pick up LOTRO . I have heard many great things about this game and not really much of anything negative about but, I ask for all opinions both good and bad. Hopefully I can find something worth while.

---Thank you for your time---

"Eye for an Eye"

Right now, a lot of veteran players are rolling the new classes, it is the best time to hitch a ride and really get into the game , as far as WAR, I have not played it but know it is "pvp" centric, LotRO is a PVE game with a touch of player versus player.

ill be more than happy to represent the bad!

the game is glued down by lore (even though apparently all tolkien races have maps built into their heads and can talk to people miles away with utmost ease), so it cant really go anywhere that the books didnt already go. it is totally an adult nerd-o-centric population not many little kiddies, tons of lore nazis and know-it alls.

the game itself is BEAUTIFUL, and boring. yea yea nice view under dx10, same crappy target monster and start the sequencing gameplay. nothing too inventive about the game, yay house...and people who live to decorate them (note:interior decorator skillz in a mmorpg), hooray titles...that really do nothing but prove you are 1 of the MANY people that killed # of monster X, or ate something you shouldnt have, or did a stupid quest chain, or helped take down a boss....whoopie. fishing is just a gay ole' time sink that they tried to put off as a hobby.

the pvp is just stupid, they should have atleast made it so there are monster quests to level them, it feels so stupid to just grind a monster to get more stuff, actually playing the monster would have been 100x more fun, but oh wait...then noone would play it because you play lotro to play as a hero. pathetic effort on their part the 1 map isnt even that good (though some o the gear is decent).

regular pvm is a simple formula, though with this game theres a twist. normal game:talk to npc, get quest, look at map, go to location, do quest, return to npc. lotro:talk to npc (maybe even read it if you give a rats ass about plot) start spamming for help with said quest OR look it up online so you are not challenged by what might involve some thought, have someone (be it human or guide) hold your hand while you do the quest, return to npc. aside from that its "go kill # of slugs or whatever to get a trait". ofcourse there is the standard run around collecting nodes thing too (why doesnt that seem inventive anymore?) but mostly its a VERY VERY easy game.

that brings me to the main caveat: this game is dumb simple! if you are a lackidasical, slacker, knuckle dragger, somebodys grand parent, total "smoked to death" pot head, or semi-retarded this game is just the right speed for you (i left out total LOTR fanboy since if you were one you would already be playing). however if you want competitive gameplay, meaningful pvp, a challenging play experience, or a community that is more like a gunshow than a bake sale this game will let you down.

notes: people always say how helpful the community is...well thats fine to say but realise some of these people LIVE to know this stupid crap (met several of them). try talking to an engineer about their chosen field, show genuine intrest. they can go on for days and days just rattling off all the stuff they know! it is their NATURE. THEY GET OFF ON IT, they are not being helpful for the sake of being helpful, they are doing it to prove how much they know (and they probably know it from repeatedly looking it up on web sites)!

tolkien is to shakespeare as rowling is to gaiman as far as fantasy writers go. that same level of creativity (shall we call it idea stealing?) is all through this game.

i dont understand wanting to start a game AFTER the expansion comes out, would make far more sense to do it before so you dont have TONS (ok 1 week worth) of catching up to do.

"Eye for an Eye"

Think one of the reason people are looking , is the 2 new dynamic classes. All I know is that htere is a  lot of people rolling new toons ! and the classes are pretty good that ive heard no one complain about playing through the content again,

As for all "bad" when was having fun such a bad thing ? Each there own

WAR and LotRO are completely different games and I like them both. One thing they do have in common is that they are both suitable for the casual player and that it is possible to solo your character to max level if you want to. There's plenty of group content in both too if that's what you prefer.

LotRO has beautiful scenery, tons of content and you can actually craft stuff that has some use and make money selling it to your fellow players if that's your thing. There are dozens of instanced dungeons linked together by an ongoing storyline starting at very low levels and ending with the big raids that make up the main focus of the end game for high level characters.

Now would be a very good time to start playing the game as the expansion has brought two new classes, the Rune Keeper and the Warden and most of the existing player base has rolled at least one of them. You'll have plenty of people to level up with, the only problem being that you'll mainly be playing with those two classes. I think Turbine have realised that though as the two classes are complimentary to each other as one is a tank and the other a nuker/healer hybrid. There shouldn't be much problem tackling most of the group content with fellowships made up of of just those two classes.

I've been playing WAR since it launched and have been enjoying it immensely. I've returned to LotRO for the expansion and  it costs me nothing to play other than the small cost of the box due to the lifetime subscription I took out last year. However,  I'll still keep my WAR subscription going for now as it is so different to LotRO. I love the way it's possible to log in, sign up for the scenario queue and be playing in PvP mayhem minutes later. It's casual PvP just like Counterstrike, Team Fortress, etc. You can get involved even if you just have half an hour to spare before doing something in rl.

If you're not sure which game to play, toss a coin. Most people can have fun in either.

Lord of the Rings Online: The Balrog WILL kill you.

to keep it simple:

LoTRO = probably the best PvE experience in MMOland (though I have played its PvP, and its pretty fun, but its built more for the casual player. So hardcore PvPers might get bored of it after a while)

WAR = supposibly (havent actually played it) the best PvP experience. (though I have seen some people at work play these popular "public quests" and it looked eerily similar to Guild Wars' PvP style...almost exact o.0  ..but the RvR I guess is suppose to be its strong point.. whatever)

...yea, there is a small bias there  :P

Why did he come to LOTRO to QQ and complain about know-it-all Warhammer engineers?

There's no engineer class in LOTRO. Nothing close to it either, unless you consider they are both dwarves.

9/16/08 Eurogamer.net interview-Warhammer Online Creative Director Paul Barnett said in an interview that he''s (literally) betting that WAR will achieve one million subscribers within a year and three million at its peak. Optimistic or Delusional? Discuss.

Having played Aoc and WAR this year, I can only say, give LOTRO a try. It sure is a good MMO game experience, but how long it keeps you is a matter of perspective. It has very good story driven quests and a good atmosphere. Its a bit too limited due to the boundaries of the Tolkien lore, but surely one of the most solid games out there atm.
