the recent gameplay video has proved the game is real. but even so, I don't see how anyone can believe alot of the features DF has claimed. such as a seemless world that supports 10,000 simulatanous players. no way is a 10, 000 player first person shooter possible even without the rest of the gameplay. |

In the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow. |
EvE online has proven that it can be done. However I can only hope that what they promised is actually there. |

"Warcry - When you were originally talking about the server-cluster design, the theoretical limit was 60,000 players. After factoring in internet bandwidth etc you revised this to approximately 15,000-20,000. Have the estimates for number of supportable players changed or should we still expect to see those kind of numbers? Erik - Theoretically there's no limit to the number of simultaneous players in a single world. In practice, the individual server load will exponentially increase as the number of server computers in a world simulation increases, and at some point we will not get additional gain from further horizontal scaling (adding more computers). At what point we reach this limit is hard to say before open beta and real measurements, but currently my requirement is at least 10000 players, and my hopes are for double that."
Edit: Forgot to mention that the quote is from 2003... I haven't seen a more recent Dev. quote on the subject. |

Functionless Art is Simply Tolerated Vandalism... |
I believe it. I just think that the space time flows really slow for them. They still think its somewhere around 2001-2002 in their world while the outside world is living in 2008. Maybe they need a flux capacitor I don't know. If they don't adjust their time dials the game probably won't come out until 2012 our time. Which will be around 2005-2006 their time. |

I don't see why not as wow has about 3k per server I think and that was released 4 years ago. If even 10% of them try standing in the same general location then I expect it will cause a server crash like in every other mmorpg. Good job the world is supposed to be massive. How many people does WWII online have playing at once? Anyone know? Edit: WWII online has 10k players per cluster, it's not only possible but it was done in 2001. |
