I was recently checking out Capcom's multiplayer RPG Monster Hunter 3 coming out in March which is going to be available outside of Japan on a console for the first time.

It's structure is somewhat similar to Guild Wars but unlike Guild WArs it only offers PVE. Sure Guildwars offers pve but that was something it was never known for and as a result we look at it as a PVP only game.

This got me thinking in general if PVE only mmos are better than pvp only mmos.

The only real PVP only mmo I know of is Planetside and it has never done as well as Monster Hunter 1,2.

Forum Poll

Which would sell better?

PVE Only
PVP Only
Won't make a decision because I don't know of any pve only/pvp only mmos.

I voted PVE, i think it is almost safe to say that playing against the computer with your friends is far more popular than playing against another person.

That said, i would rather play a game rich in both elements.

PvP because of the lack of focus on it in many current mmos.

May contain nuts.

Both would sell well tbh, but I would personally buy PvE only as I'm not really interested in PvP at all. If I want PvP gameplay I'd go play CoD or something.

That is the most retarded argument against pvp, and it gets thrown around so often by the carebear crowd.

Yes, I used the C word.

Perhaps you would care to enlighten me as to why that argument is 'retarded' as you so eloquently put it?

If someone could make a mmorpg that would inspire the vast untapped masses of pvp gamers to pay $15 a month it would be the pvp game.

Lets just be friends and play video games.

Ideally PvP would be great but as far as "pure" pvp i don't know. If it was all PvP you are going to rely on a huge playerbase to make the game fun and interesting. If there is no PvE at all the charactors would have to be majorly customizable like guild wars. "Pure" PvP would also make the group dynamic harder to enjoy usually due to how fast pvp combat usually goes down. Once again guild wars did a good job at slowing combat down enough for this to be possible and I think GW is as close as it should really get to pure PvP.

On the PvE side, its allready out there. They do just fine as stand alone games. Most do have a PvP as a tacked on afterthought but do the PvE very well. My example of this is Vanguard. The "pure" PvE is alot easier to accomplish for an mmorpg because its true to the nature of rpg's. Dungeon crawling is a staple of MMORPGS since MuD's. Though I did play some MuD's with great pvp.

I think the hybrid is as good as we will ever get.

Before WOW, there were MMORPG''s. After WOW there were online solo single RPG''s.

PVE, because in most cases a PVP'er can handle a PVE game (with some amount of grumbling), but a PVE'er has a much tougher time accepting the ganking in a PVP world.
