A question to all of you veteran gamers What game do you think has the best comat system that requires some skill in an RPG or mmorpg game. I must say that i really liked the combat system in the rpg game "mount and blade". It´s an small new rpg game with really impressive combat system. choose a game and describe why you think its so good.

I intend to live forever -- So far so good! |
I too enjoyed the combat in Mount and Blade, however the game began to wear on me after a while and now I've shelved it for a while and perhaps will go back to it one day. In regards to MMORPG's I liked the way DAoC did it. There were things to think about when you were fighting in regards to your position relative to the opponent, the kind of weapons you were using and how that would affect the armor the enemy was wearing. Everything had a strenght and a weakness and it had to be taken into account if you really wanted to get the most out of combat be it ranged, melee or magical. |

I don't honestly think I have an all around favorite. For melee I would say Dark Age of Camelot. I thought how the entire system worked was great. Tank classes with protect/guard abilities, reactive styles, chain styles. This is still probably number 1 in my opinion for melee. Close to it or at least a system I enjoyed "even more" all around was the system for attacks in SWG Pre-CU. The only other MMO that really stands out for me is what they tried to do with combat in AoC. It was fun and different (in my opinion). For RPG's most any RPG I've played on a PC is either bland or point and click for the most part. But I mean I loved UO and there wasn't even a "system". I mean at least when I was playing there were no styles etc it was just enter combat or cast a spell (ok every cast paralyze then explosion -> ebolt due to the delay on explosion that made both spells hit at the same time if timed right). /end ramble |

I havent tried Dark Age of Camelot, sounds like a good skill game. I played UO a loooong time ago, when it was first introduced and i liked it. But what do you thing about the uppcomming mmorpg TCoS. It looks like a game with some skill, but havent heard so much about it yet. |

DAoC had some good ideas but the interface always felt clunky to me....I also lagged badly alot for some reason......As for TCoS take a wait and see approach......IT should release in the next month or so and you should get alot more info at that point than we have now...... |

If i was strictly going for straight out PVP type combat, witch IMO IS the only way to go for actual skills,it would be EXACTLY like Unreal Tournament 1/2.You need maps that are specifically designed for PVP and weapon BALANCE,so that you have to think about witch weapon to use when, where and how. These games i see out there are all horrible for achieving anything skillful.Even if they try to utilize UT type PVP,they FAIL in there map designs. This is why PVP will NEVER belong in a RPG,because RPG type terrains and buildings are not designed for skillful PVP. |
