I did think of another issue - no auto attack (or a different attack system to what MMO players were used to). Going way back, I remember a lot of players commenting that CoH/V was too 'twitch' for them at launch (remember when that used to be a problem :-) and that not having an auto attack made them too slow. Combat was too hectic.

I'm not saying it was a major reason, but anecdotally it appears that CoH/V was more popular among first-time MMO players than those familiar with the genre.

The fact is, when Champion Online comes out, CoX's user count is going to decrease substantially. CO is from what I interpreted, what Cryptic wanted CoH to be originally, however due to technology restraints and financial shortages, they wound up with what's now CoX.

That's one prediction.

On the other hand, you might see a large number of dual subscribers. those who cling to CoX, but still want to try/enjoy Champion Online, and those who simply have ability/lack of focus to play both games at once. (myself guilty as charged with the latter)

I agree - ChampO is going to hit the CoH/V playerbase hard. It will be interesting to see who trickles back and who ends up staying.

I dont see how WoW (or really any EQ mould high fantasy MMO) is any less repetitive than CoX.

For me it comes down to the environments that you encounter and explore not being nearly varied enough.

Character generation and combat are quite a lot of fun in CoH, but that can only take me so far.  I'm too much of an explorer.  I rarely get any sense of wonder from the environments in CoH.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

i dont think this game is "repeating". People who say its repeating is probably refering to its earlier state, where missions were more or less the go-in-kill-everything style...  The game is receiving constant updates and newer content like the recent invasion.

That said, i dont think the studio will give up on CoH even when Champions is released. Both games are from the same studio and thus rivalry is not present.

Ipod,

Cryptic Studio's, the developer of CoX, has sold the game to the Publisher NCSoft. Along with the sale of the IP and code, most of the developing team also were hired onto NCSoft.

So, when Champions does go online, there will be rivalry.

Not a retired MMORPG.com mod

Too much instancing. Every freakin mission is instanced. I played the trial and quit after a couple days. It felt like a single box game with some hubs where people hung out and chatted. Not what I am looking for in a MMOG at all.

I don't think this would be a reason for a game to not be super big. Look at GW. Great game, fantastic graphics/soundtrack yet mostly instancing.

I think mostly that the game is a nitch game, based on superheroes. The fighting and costume creator are tops. I'll feel the grind but at the same time I've felt the grind in all the MMOs I've played.

You mention that it felt like people just hung out in a hub and chatted. I felt the same way in WoW. If i'm not running a raid, most people will be in the general chat gabbing away, swapping Chuck Norris jokes in the Barrens. Just a larger hub, but still a hub.

The less you expect, the more you'll be surprised. Hopefully, pleasantly so.

The reason so many mmo vets dislike the game is the simple fact that there is no real traditional itemization in the game. I know about 10 people personally who would come back in a heart-beat if they added "real loot" to the NPC tables. Everything else in the game is just amazing imo.
