To live free is worth dying for. |
I love WAR, I am enjoying the hell out of it. But I see it's failure clearly. Last night, my sister-in-law FINALLY picked the game up, and in her first two jaunts into the scenarios were disasterious. I blame that partially on Order being so overpowered (on our server they kick our arses left and right) but on the otherhand, I blame "The failure of WAR".
What is this failure of which I speak?
It's not a gameplay mechanic, for that is all solid. Most of the issues people have with the graphics are either running a low end machine or personal taste. It's not the lag, for much of that can be mitigated by a well run rig, but even then MMO's will always have some lag, especially with more people around you. That's just life.
No, it's a simple, fundemental flaw. WAR is not WoW, yet too many try to play WAR as if it were WoW (or insert most any other MMO).
WAR has the basics of your standard MMO. Combat, controls and interface. It's all the same functionality in terms of over all execution. And there in lies the rub. People log in and think "Hey! It's just like WoW!" It's got Orcs, and Elves, Dwarves and Humans! Quests, battlegrounds and I can get GEAR!!!
So they run off like morons head long alone againt the masses, after all, they found, got or were awarded Blues, their "decked" out for their level!
And promptly get their butts handed to them. I'm seeing some people realize the error of their ways, but far, far too many have not figured this out, at all. And until the masses figure out teamwork, tactics and skill trump ego, gear and wishful thinking... WAR is flawed. |

Even if WAR doesn't succeed straight away, it's possible it could become a cult hit and grow like EVE online has |

Sounds like the failure is not of the game, but of the people looking for a WoW clone. |

Yeah, in war's there are armies. People thinking they can run around solo in WAR, destroying everything in sight are in for a surprise. This isn't a "LAWL I got 2k rating, I pwnz u" game. It's a, "I'm part of an organized guild and we work together" game. |

:) Glad to see I'm not the only one to realize this, I'd have to question my opinion.

I think you might have a point. I think I'm guilty of this myself. Initially, it looks very familar and plays very familiar, which is why it doesn't seem very original. I've rerolled on a RvR server and I'm looking for some RvR action. I thought I may as well play on an RvR server as it's an RvR game. |

I agree with everything you said, except for the "WAR is flawed" part. I don't think WAR is to blame, it's just that players are not used to playing a game of this type. Being different isn't necessarily a flaw, but that is just my opinion of course. |

Dont stop feeling, just start thinking. |
Ya only have to question yer opinion when it's wrong.
Honestly I was kind of expecting this issue with players, because statistically not many gamers have all that great of skill any more, especially gamers pulling over from purely stat based games. The ability to stack gear and some levels and throw your character into the fray without a high amount of risk is a rather unreasonable approach to games to begin with because it's just dampening any real thinking the players have to do in order to balance out player skill. In the long run they don't even need skill, just a monkey that knows how to press a sequence on a hotbar.
Then WAR comes out, people migrate over, and their spiffy armor and couple of levels no longer make them gods and they're all confused how three people just mauled them. Well...there was three on one, logically that was bound to happen! But aparrently that's not what they want, they don't want to have to think through their assault and wait and actually work together, they want to zerg ahead and call it good.
I was hoping more people would like the system in WAR, but apparently not enough players like to put a modicum of thought into their gameplay... |

| Eh...it works... MMOs I remember: AC, AA, DAoC, EQ, EQ2, L, L2, PS, LOtrO, DDO, Planetside, BE WW2, WoW, Ryzom, SWG, TR, CoX, HL, DR, PT, Exteel, Guild Wars, AO, Archlord, Dreamlords, Atlantica, Entropia, EVE, FF XI, Maple Story, Ogre Island, Planeshift, Rappelz, RFO, Runescape, MXO, SotNW, SL, Vanguard, UO, WAR, PotBS. Mmos I subscribe to: none currently I need a better game... |
