I'm just curious what the average player keeps in stock as far as ships are concerned.

Depends, but I always have a few "war stashes" around empire, consisting of a few frigs/inties, BC's and BS's. Those are dormant though, only to be used when I don't have another option.

Then I have my active ships and then ofcourse come the alts, so uhm... tons. If I had to add it up isk-wise I'd say about 2 bil in ships and fitting for those ships, of which my active ships make up about 500-1000 mil depending on the situation. Those numbers exlude alts and non-assigned modules.

I have quite a few myself.

Generally I split my ships into "Ships that don't explode a lot" - ie mission ships, my freighter, and salvager, my helios, etc, and "Ships that do explode a lot" - pvp ships.

Generally the non-explding ships I'll only have one of, while the exploding ships I'll generally have around a dozen or so all fit and named the same and ready to go, that way when one explodes I can go back the station, grab another, and be back in action.

At least 50, probably more.

Most valuable is my rhea, but i also own a crapton of hacs (eagles, mostly) and logistics (about 15 of them). The rest is mostly ceptors, eaf, small stuff. Two commandships lurk around somewhere too.

All those combat ships/logistics are in my stashes in 0.0 and lowsec, mainly so i can get back to them after a fight. I used to buy ships for 1-2b for every major campaign, but i never lost as many as i bought, and now they pile up..

Personally, as a Merc who has to move locations a lot when contracts change I tend to keep a small but effective set of ships handy at any given time. If one gets popped I can very quickly replace it with a shopping alt (which I'm moving to my main acct and canceling my alt acct with the new changes to ghost training).

You will find that it varies wildly depending on what people *do* in EVE. For Mercs who tend to relocate a lot having a small number of ships to move is helpful though some, very wealthy, merc pilots will just buy new ships for each contract and wind up with dozens of ships scattered all over EVE. I'm not bad off but I personally can't afford to do that just yet. So I tend to stick with 5 or 6 ships I really enjoy flying and just replace them if they get destroyed.

I have noticed that as I've gotten better and better at PVP (read: Die a lot less) I have started to accumulate ships in central systems where they tend to get left behind when we make longer moves ;)

Yup, it's not like ships are getting worse over time. I was tidying up my assets and found a stash of fully t2 fitted taranis with a setup i still use. They were at least one year old.

I closed the door of that hangar again, won't pick them up..someday i'll visit the south again, and then i might need them.

What is mercenary work exactly? All I've ever known is Alliance pvp and fighting to keep our space. Perhaps I need to broaden my horizons

People who get paid to beat someone up in eve.
"Someone" can be anything from a lone player to a whole alliance.

Most of the time mercs 'make their own contracts' to be quite honest, that or it's not a merc job at all but helping friends/mains to attack a political/military target.
