Really, sometimes enough is enough. I mean, I regard myself as a very critical gamer. I play computergames for 25 years, and as in literature or movies I think we should be more critical with games in newspapers and electronic media reviews. BUT, there is a huge trend for doomsaying and non-constructive trashing of games, not SO much here on MMORPG yet, but by and far in the forums. I mean, I have writting critical articles about AoC and WAR myself, thats not the point. But there is a fine line between criticizing actual things which are either broken or not working well and doomsaying and trashing games. "The game is utter trash." - "The game is lost." - "The game is all shit." blah blah blah. I mean, somehow as a critical reviewer and customer I really cringe to be cast in the same light as such people, and sorry but I just feel to be in bad company with posters like that. Yes games must be looked at more critical than the often blindly overhyping reviews. WAR for instance is an ok game, but GREATLY overvalued by the media. Nevertheless, its a difference between reporting about actual, experienced problems and doomsaying! Sure, a review is always subjective. There is no such thing as objective critique. Its always a point of view, but pls IF you have something to say, write it in detail and without the "THE END IS NIGH" emotionality we often read. Its a frigging computer game, and not someone shot your mother! Looking at the forum for the recently announced "Star Wars The Old Republic" is really convulsing. People load so much hate and crap over a game hardly announced a few days ago, it really sickens me, and I feel compassion for the Bioware devs. It must be hard to work 2+ years on a game, prolly some project they love to make, and when they present their baby which can hardly say "mommy" in the present stage, its already slapped and bitched at, when its still years from release. Poor folks. I too have said my share of critical remarks (I only say Lightsabe size), but posting threads like "ITS DOOMED I NEVER PLAY A GAME WITH SUCH LIGHSABERS bohoo" jeez, thats so immature, maybe some folks listen to themselves. Thats not helping anyone. Sometimes I feel like people enjoy doomsaying, enjoy stomping a game into the ground. When I am critical, its because I try to help improve it by voicing my experience and feelings about things, ok, but way too many posting just seem like they enjoy to see a game fail, and thats quite unfortunate for all of us. If you dont like a game GENERALLY (like some said for instance they dont like a KOTOR MMO at all), then for the love of mother and child dont PLAY it. Criticizing is for those who can honestly say "I like the game geneally BUT this and that detail is borked". If your aim is just to rant for the sake of ranting, pls go to Speakers Corner instead. Messenge over. Thanks. |

Originally posted by Yunbei I think you'd be suprised how true this is. Often it is because people want to see off the competition from their own beloved game, or have something against a particular publisher/developer. It can also be in response to excited fanboy comments such as 'zomg this game is going to pwn XXX'. The doomsayers might take personal offence to such comments made against their favourite game, and won't stop until they've put the fanboys in their place. |

because people bashing on the games are those that have been called nerds or geeks all their life long and now they try to take their vengeance on the game designers and whatever they can or whoever they can... did I rly say that ?...DAMN ! |

Partially for some of the reasons i said above, but also because the internet allows people to be jerks due to the lovely anonymity (sp?) that it gives to the user. I am a big DF fan and there are a lot of sad cases over there that I guarentee would not say the things they did if they had to say it to someone's face. There is a great comic that says something to the extent of normal person + internet forum = complete jackass. All I recommend is that you find peace in the fact that at the end of the day, nothing that is said on these forums has any effect on the success of a game. It may change the opinions of one or two people who can't decide things for themselves, but those people are lost anyways. So I say discuss the games you like with others, and by all means contructively critique the ones you dislike and have good conversation while ignoring the trolls. They are always easy to spot, but not always easy to not get baited by. |

Why didn't you post this a month ago when it started against WAR? Or 8 months ago when it happened against AoC? Is it because you yourself did not like those games and therefore don't give a rats ass if everyone and their mother trash talks them? Now that it's happening to The Old Republic online you feel the need to make a stand?

Well you can be reasonable if you see the other part is honestly trying to create a good MMO. But now, you can see it's all about the money, they are making MMOs like they could be making chips or pencils. MMOs have no soul in them. So it's not the people, it's the crap they are trying to sell us. And by the way, they treat us like crap too when there is a problem. |

Every game gets the players and the kind of attention it deserves. It has been like that since the beginning. The overall quality of the posts in mmorpg.com and elsewhere is very low, but mostly because people are too lazy to use many elaborate words to express what they feel, which is usually something along the lines of "THIS GAME SUCKS". And "THIS GAME SUCKS" can be applied to almost every game SP and mmorpg, because the geeks/nerds who used to make computer games, putting all their individual talent and their souls in them, were replaced by cohorts of frustrated underwaged Comp.Sc. Bachelors, governed by soulless bean-counters. Truly creative work is rare in computer games development and rarer still in mmos, or did I miss some major mmo release that wasn´t an established IP? |
