Unless of course you are a soldier fighting in a modern MMO. Then it doesn't matter whether you run or not, you will be back in the fight in 15 seconds.

The lack of any real death penalty in most current MMOs severely limits any use of realistic tactics or strategies. Maneuvers such as tactical retreats, regrouping, counter offensives, they all mean nothing in the motto of dying being a part of the game with no punishment and immediate delivery back into the battle.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Jumpgate Evolution, Earthrise, Fallen Earth, anything sandbox.

EVE has a pretty harsh death penalty IMO, you see enough people crying on forums about losing weeks/months/years worth of work in a few seconds due to pvp

I'm not saying that death penalties should be brutal, but just enough to knock you out of the fight for a little bit, enough to notice a difference in the fight. The idea of throwing the person that dies back into the battle immediately at full health is stupid.

I agree with you, and i was citing EVE as an example because the death penalty is enough to knock you out of the battle permanently, unless you have a spare ship handy

I agree with you entirely, but unfortunately you will probably find that most people don't.

I guess most people don't want to think. They want to hop on, churn out another compulsive victory or defeat, and hop off.

I find that very disappointing, because one primary reason I was drawn to MMORPGs was this: intellectual integrity, where winning means outthinking your opponents.

i loved SWG's Rot system that made death worthwhile .. not a quick teleportation back home.

Current MMO: LOTR online
MMO played: WOW, EVE, DAOC, PS,

This is a hard "balance" to achieve because each gamer has their own preference on death penalties.  I personally like to get back into the fight right away without any penalties or debuffs against me because I feel when I'm gaming I'm their to have a good time, not to try and mimic real life inside the game. But then you feel like theirs no "risk" in dying so you just go into the fight like a raging bull (which is my tactics lol).

That and losing your buffs including food.

I've not seen a game do it better  or equal since.
