Blizzard has announced that second of World of Warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King racked up 2.8 million sales worldwide in its first 24 hours on release.

This makes it the fastest-selling PC game ever released. It also keeps the title in the family; the previous record-holder was first WOW expansion The Burning Crusade, which managed 2.4 million in one day in January last year.

Most of those 2.8 million sales will have come from North America and Europe, although Lich King benefited from the addition of Chile, Argentina and Russia to Blizzard's domain. Australasia and south-east Asia got the expansion a day or two later, and China's still waiting.

World of Warcraft has 11 million players worldwide now, versus the 8 million it had when Burning Crusade launched - so in terms of sell-through to subscribers, Lich King performed fractionally less well than its predecessor.

The 3.5 million copies Burning Crusade sold in its first month will be the next of its own records Blizzard is looking to beat. One analyst has predicted that Lich King could net 5 million in the same period, according to Gamasutra.

And how many copies were bought by Gold farmers?

less than 1% I would imagine. just like WAR,AOC and others.

the statment clearly states it does not include china, so that 2.8million to a player base of about 4 million EU+US players in 24 hours.

TBC sold 2.4million to a base of 3.6 million EU+US players

so its aboutt he same.

When did Wow lose two million players in NA/Euro?

Last time I checked WoW had near six million NA/Euro players. (something like 5.5 million+)

These sub numbers seem off to me.

Anyway once blizzard puts out an official report of 12 million players buying the Xpac then I will believe they have that many.

Anyone know how many copies of TBC sold? did it surpass the 12 million mark? yeah probably not.

the last time we had offical western figures was january 2008 http://www.blizzard.com/us/press/080122.html 4.5million EU+US subs.

TBC sold 2.4million in 24 hours and 3.6million in 1 month to a base of 3.8 million EU+US players

so its about the same.

so clear things up WRATH is not avaliable in china yet, just as TBC was not at launch. be a few months yet.

I've seen all the bosses in WOTLK, all of the good guilds have already cleared all the content, now the 2nd tier guilds are clearing it also :)

Next week the mouth-breathers and casual raiders will clear it all also. Epics for everyone who can faceroll through easymode PVE made for kids :)

Oh and if you don't need me in WoW that's fine. I used to be a hardcore raider who loved WoW PVE. Now I think it's easymode garbage made for kids :)

I see you decided to ignore my comments, 1 guild has completed the content as they played it beta for 6months, no other guild has, there will be some guild running 10man naxx maybe even 25man but thats it. Again you have not played wrath so your not educated enough to comment.  I have played WAR and what a dissapointment that was in all areas.

No one made it into Altdorf Palace on that first Altdorf siege, and no one killed Karl Franz. Also, Lost Vale has harder PVE bosses than anything in WOTLK

And you're wrong - all the good guilds are clearing WOTLK already, it's easy mode. My old server is Kazzak and here are some comments from the progression thread there :

I see noone really bothered to post it even.

Agreed, one-shotting Kel'thuzad is not to cool.

10man or 25man? does not say.

On my server GrimBatol (very old hi-pop server) , about 3 25man raid groups are going through NAXX (naxx being a starter raid BTW) no one has cleared it yet, only 1 guild killed 25man Sartharion , no guild has done 25man Malygos.

Theres more sucess in 10man versions but again only about 6 guilds doing this content.

These are the elite raid guilds, many of whom played on beta for months learning these bosses or looked up guides on the net.

Your acting like these players have never seen these bosses or played these bosses prior to Wrath being released, thats not true they were accessable in beta for months, videos being made, guides being wirtten and players experiencing it.

And you cant compare the tacked on tank'n'spank PvE raids in WAR to crafted scripted PvE raids in WoW.

Let's face it, ALL pve and raid WOTLK content was beaten by the best guild 2 days after release, and most of the top 50-100 guilds have now cleared all of it also. It will take 1 more week for most of the good raiding guilds to complete all of it - including malygos, full naxx 25 etc

LOL talk about making stuff up, 1 guild has completed the endgame stuff becuase they the most hardcore raid guild who... and wait for it.. played all the end game stuff in beta for 6 months, so all they did was skip all the content and power lvl to 80 then do what they have been doing in beta for 6months and beat the end games bosses.  NO OTHER GUILD HAS DONE THIS FACT!!!!

Then everyone and their granny who has never played a computer game will be able to kill Kelthuzad and Malygos. Sad but true, WoW is just dumb now.

WoW has been dumbed down so that anyone with a keyboard can complete it and get their epics. It's boring to know everyone has full epics and there's no variety, no sense of achievement.

There's simply no point to WoW any more. It's not fun, and it's too easy. It's pointless.

WAR may not be as polished, but it is more fun. I play with a good top-end guild, we are killing bosses in Lost Vale that are harder than any boss in WOTLK (order doesn't have repel)

Please play end game bosses in wrath before commenting.

And the mass PVP with zone control throughout the actual game map (rather than some instances lake BG aka AV2) is more fun than crappy arena duels and the same BGs again and again.

The lake is NOT instanced, again.. play Wrath before commenting on things.

I see a lot of people who have now completed WoW/WOTLK looking around saying "is that all there is?"

Again making stuff up is funny

I'm happy playing WAR :) Good, dont need you in WoW =D

I work in an IT call centre.. nothing more annoying that a know it all "I am an IT engineer why do I have to do this", what they have to realise is we have a process to go through, we cannot skip steps.

GM was just doing his job, following the process, be nice to our GM's its not often we see em

I saw my friend play the DK to 58.  Handout and handout.

This game is for the lowest common denominator with a lot of time on his hands.

all MMOs who have nolifers who aim to maxcap ASAP, WoW is no difference.  The players who max cap then have to sit on their ass for weeks waiting for normal players to catch up.

Just so you know endgame was completed by the most hardcore guild in WoW, the guild in question played all the end game bosses in beta for 4-6months so come release they simply helped each other power lvl to max cap in a few days greatly helped with the top end lvl 70 PVE raid gear from TBC.. it was then business as usual as they killed all end game bosses dozens of times in beta, they knew the fights.

It wil take heavy raid guilds atleast 6 months to get that far
Noraml raid guilds close to 9 months

If you honesty think this is normal and they experienced all that wrath has to offer.. then.... pfft

As to DK's, the starting area is designed to teach you how to play the DK over 3 levels so yes it handout.. duh. But its super fun too.

I got wrath on launch day and I am only 20% in lvl72... with about 17 hours played.

One of the best guilds in the world has already cleared the new Naxx on heroic. Hardest PVE raid has already been beaten.

LOL!

I am definately sticking with WAR.

What your forgetting is they played Beta for 6 months, so by retail they knew all the fights, the hardest thing was powerleveling to 80, by grinding mobs and 5mans [they would of skipped 95% of the PvE content by doing this] .. the rest [raids] they had done a million times before.

This is a hardcore, wow 24/7, no job/life guild whoes goal was to use their vast beta experience and team play to complete the end game raids ASAP.

But this has already been pointed out in WoW forums. Dont get me started on lack of WAR endgame or that lvl 1 is the same as lvl 40 game play.

1300'ish on GrimBatol EU today at 6pm server time, Think thats the highest its ever been.  I kind of dont mind the 90min wait... which is odd.

I have seen 1 DK in northrend (that was today), lots around Stormwind around lvl 60 (as you would expect) and no doubt loads in outload.. I dont agree with OP. they are not everywhere (other than where you expect them to be) and no not every 1 has one.

Not like the content and raids were new to this guild, they played with beta for months, learning the fights untill they become routine. The hardest thing was getting to 80, once at 80 they all knew the fights, they all knew what to do.  They were all in the best gear and the top end lvl 70 gear with 80 weapons and trinkets is good enough for 80 raiding.

Just as a guild in pre-wrath could do all the end game in TBC in 1 day with enough practice.

These were not fresh faced raiders, these were hard-core. no job, Wow 24/7 raiders who had played all these raids dozens of times in beta and had the strategy all worked out.

Blizzard did not get the tunning wrong the raid guild got the preperation right.

This kind of news is very disturbing, for the  players and for Blizzard. You would never ever see or hear this kind of news coming from games like EQ, hell no!!, Just proves how downgraded games are now a days. I dont care if these guys are world #1 or not, the material that Blizzard put out is not worth the money, like i said before, its the same content as the original WoW. Thx for these guys for proving that this expansion is not worth it.

So you have not played WoW:WOTLK yet feel your entitled to pass judgment on it because you read some place some 1 decided to bypass the quests, dungeons and content and just grind mobs for 64 hours to be the first to 80.

What you read is the exception and not the rule, I Have played abour 10-12 hours id say since thursday and I only dinged 70 today, doing the odd dungeon run and plently of questing (got my 1500 quest achievemnt too).

It is an achievement I do not doubt that.

I do not doubt their dedication to what they want to do if it rocks their boat etc. but I kinda feel the game shouldn't allow this to happen in such a short period of time.

If it was done in 1-2 weeks then It would be better I think.

I'm not posting this to troll or complain even if it does dissapoint me personally the game can be fast forwarded, I just wanted to see how the rest see it :)

No worries, I only mentioned mmo-champion because there were a few people who held a very similar opinion, my apologies for sounding like I was being accusatory.

I am curious though, is it just that you think Raiding in general has been dumbed down too much? I do agree that seeing Naxx25 cleared this fast is an indicator of a few things (especially when past content has never been cleared this fast, ever), but I have yet to make the judgment for myself as to whether or not Raiding has been dumbed down to the point of "faceroll" status.

If it has been dumbed down we only have ourselves to blame, all the QQ'ing over 40man raids etc.  I prefered the raids and dugeon pre-TBC, they felt more epic, BRD is a good example, a massive place and UBRS.  I have felt the starter dungeons in Wotlk are a little easy, no one uses CC any more its, just gather them up and AOE.  So far thats my only negative comment on wrath.

Again people are over reacting, we have no idea in what form these microtransactions will take.. vanity items? characrter slots? I very much doubt you can buy offensive\defensive gear and spells.

Lets wait before we pass judgment.

I'd be the first to gather together all my Blizzard games and have a bonfire if it does turn out I have pay for Bnet and/or players can buy gear.  Untill then Ill wait and see what developes.

In 2 days a 25man raid is cleared and the cap is reached.

Does it matter if they did it cause they knew tactics?

And it's doable in sunwell lvl 70 gear ?

Man blizzard devs said u can use sunwell gera into late late 70's jesus christ their are peopel still using tanking items from bwl in tbc in bt and mh.   THIS is world number 1 guild, repeat worlds number 1 guild.  Nihilum and sk gaming merged, so you find it suprising that the best players from the worlds number 1 raiding guild have cleared naxx, with the knowledge they have from beta and pre tbc about naxx?  jesus they could probably do naxx blindfoded.  This is noob raid for them most likely.

Yeh I'm sure it was all skill

Best people/ players/ guild whatever I still believe 2nd day to be capped and clearing a 25man raid is a tad too much

This is 1 guild, som 40 odd people out of 11miilion, who after learning 25 naxx backwards powerleveled to 80 and sweeped through the raid in 1 sitting.

Just like BWL, I remember my guild would take 3 sittings to clear it then after a few month all done in 1 sitting. around 2 hours... will practice things get very very easy.

You cant select 25 pug players, auto level them to 80 and expect them to clear naxx. but this guild who spent many hours in naxx in beta can .

[edit] This event is very much the exception and not the rule, A rouge dinged 80 on my server today (first rouge to do so.. yet I am still lvl 70 LOL)

They have not said you will HAVE  to play to use Battle.net, just some features of it, as long as I can join and make games I dont care what other fancy stuff is on there. Think being bounded around are custom chat channels and tornements.

It would be commercial sucide to force people to pay for Battle.net, they would lose 99% of there players overnight.

Although I am fully against any kind of micro transactions we have no idea in what form they will appear so untill then I'll wear my banner with pride.

I'd post a picture, but it wouldn't do them cute lil guys any justice as you have to hear them in their playful antics.

I did that quest on beta.. i assume its the quest you rescue the baby murlocks.. they are so cute it almost made me cry when I had to let them go, having an army of them follow me making all them cute noises.. aww
