Well back on topic

Nope, no modern or early historical war game MMO's

About 2 years ago they were talking about a Call of Duty MMO but it looks like that went out the window with CoD 5 releasing (back to WWII, Pacific this time)

There was also a brief mention of an war MMO based on Tom Claney's novels. That one disappeared and was never mentioned again.

IMHO, the last 3 years of failed fantasy MMO's have given this genre a serious blackeye and I don't think to many investors are interested in them right now.

You could give Planetside a try. That's Sci-Fi but it use to be a great persistant shooter back when people played it.

Tabula Rasa is a pretty good Sci Fi action MMO. They have capture points, psuedo FPS style combat (but in the third person) and rocket launchers that actually kill stuff in one shot plus a fairly strong RPG aspect. Its problem is that its PvE focused.

Other then that, stick with regular shooters. MMO's make poor wargames, they are to slow paced and simple. If they speed up the play tempo to much like in Tabula Rasa's or Planetsides case, the general community can't deal to well with it. MMOers like that slow paced auto attack play. Throw them an EQ or WoW clone where they can kill 10 rats standing front of them and they are happy little campers.

City of Heroes

I also won a copy of Tabula Rasa on Massively.

Not that I will have the time to really play anything in Dec with the holidays / parties and kids.

IMHO, you can't really pinpoint a specific time We will be ready. It's an event, that if it happened, we would have no control over. We will probably not be the ones desiding when the time is right, they will obviously.

"Prepare for the anal probing human. Zeek get the R.I.P.P.E.R. 9000 ready. Human, you will feel quite a bit of discomfort"

Are you ready?

Vanguard is not even remotely close to the environments in this game. Not even a little with its clunky Unreal2 engine.

Looks nice, to bad I will never get to see it I just don't have the time or patience anymore to level up & find a decent guild in L2 anymore so I can do all that cool stuff they have now.

Well, if it wasn't for not refunding all the accounts, the answer would be easy - customer service. A pro-rated refund would be the very least they should do. To apologize further and help show that they care (even if they really don't), maybe they thought a full month's refund would be better PR?

He||, maybe their accountants were lazy and didn't want to do the math to figure out the pro-rated refund on everybody who was affected.

This may come as a shocker but no Corporation gives a rats about you as a consumer.  Some just put up a better show then others.

Accountants don't decide who gets refunds, its their job to manage the money and keep as much of it as possible. They probably don't even know what an MMORPG is.

Go find me a Corporation that runs it any different.

I'd like to believe that there are still some people left in gaming that actually take pride in their work and want to give people a good experience, as well as make money.  I admit, I become more skeptical as time goes on.

I'm sure on a creative level most of them do. What I am talking about is the corporate machine that runs it all. Its job is to make money and everyone who works for it must accomodate that. Sometimes the people who make those decisions benefit the customer, sometimes they don't.

I guess we will see if that has any real impact on anything in CoX. IMHO, the clock is ticking for this game in any event. Then its off to the ranks of yesterdays game as it will lose its claim to fame, being the only Superhero MMO on the market.

I don't know how much the "Patriot Act" actually helps or if it actually does anything at all BUT what many people here don't understand is that sort of thing you posted...is very real.

Cozy and comfy none of them know or care, all that matters is they are "right" on the game forum board.

Based on many of the post here I'm starting to wonder if anyone here actually plays the game and knows WTF they are yapping about

I would honestly say go to PlanetTr. They will have links to all the updates since last year and would be the better place to get that information.

They have done a lot of bug fixing and balancing and skill fixes. As for things really added, they have a few new weapons(new versions of old weapons like double Rocket Launcher or Triple Shotgun) a few new instances and they have adjusted difficulty and worked to make the MOBs more unique.

Hmmm, well since no one here apparently knows I looked at the patches...

14 "deployments" plus smaller patches since launch..roughly 12 months ago. Each one addressing or adding something of substance...so much for all that yapping.

www.rgtr.com/news/patch_notes/index.html

There are a lot of arguements about this game but all I am seeing is it all coming down to individual taste and nothing more then that. Obviously if you are looking for a "sandbox" TR was never the right choice and I do believe it was never ever marketed as such.

Soooo.......I guess I'm finished here as there are only a handful of people here anyway who are not really all that informed about the game in any event and really have nothing to contribute but a bunch of "I hate TR" post. Back to CoX

Dunno arc,

I looked at the CoX forums and I don't see anyone talking about this stuff at all, at least not to the extent you are making it out to be, I might have missed something.

boards.cityofheroes.com/ubbthreads.php

I also looked at NCSofts Q3 report and CoX is down slightly in subs but its been sorta dropping for the last 2 years. Q3 124k vs Q2 137k. (peak of 172k in Sept 2006) Concurrency of users is down slightly. (17k down to 13k) but last quarter (Q2) they had a bunch of "open weekends"

ncsoft.net/global/ir/quarterly.aspx

They publish everything. I don't see any "mass exodus" post, I don't see anyone complaining about the PvP changes just business as usual.

For your reading pleasure, just a very small sample of all the wth are you doing to our game threads regarding Issue 13.

Also, you won't the sub hit in quarterly reports that have already been published.  People either just left in closed beta (many did) or are now leaving in open beta.  You may see the numbers next report.

People aren't leaving because of change though.  People are leaving because the devs asked for feedback, ignored it, then said they are making these changes to appeal to new players and don't really care if current players have their game ruined.

Regarding the sync bug, you'll have to look months back in the forums to see the posts about that.  It has been many months since the last content patch.  Another complaint.  This is one of the longest times the game has gone without a content patch, and it's a quest-based linear game.  Now that a patch is finally coming, the anticipated content is being pushed back, and an unwanted revamp is being pushed through.

P.S. Almost missed the largest thread on the PvP revamp, is around 300 PAGES long at this point.  You'll find most of your shocked and angry, WTH!?! posts here:

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php?Cat=0&Board=Dev&Number=12263971&Searchpage=3&Main=12221755&Words=Castle&topic=&Search=true#Post12263971

Well those threads are a mixed reaction at best, I only skimmed the first page though I sure they degenerate into the usual "my opinion is right, yours is wrong" nonsense.

You know why people are leaving? Its an old game and that happens. There is a lot of competition out there and a lot more coming in the near future.

You better get in there and have some fun now while there are still people playing because changes or not Champions and DCU are gonna steamroller this game if they have solid launches.

That statement is pretty disengenuous.  Level 30 is when you unlock your top tier skill class but actually choosing and enhancing the effectiveness (what TR players refer to as "pumping") of your skills continues all of the way to 50.

You make it sound like at 30 you're character's skill template is complete, done, and finished and you just spend the next twenty levels doing nothing but increasing attributes.

And as far as class systems go I thought TR's was really, really well done.  There just weren't enough skills/classes.  But in all reality TR's quasi-skill/class system was much more dynamic than the traditional class structures used in pedestrian MMOs (not that TR isn't pedestrian but there were a few things it did very well IMO).

I'm currently playing CoX and once you select your secondary and primary powersets that's it.  Thems your skills aside from a few you might choose out of the "general" power pools that are available to every toon.  But it's not like once I hit level X I all of the sudden have five brand new skills waiting for me.  It's still the same pool of skills I was looking at when I created the toon.

Did not mean to come across that way at all. But at level 30 you get you last skills. Can they be enhanced the rest of the way? Yes they can. Does that make them so different you feel like 30-50 was worthwhile? Not in my opinion.

Just out of curiousity....Rokurgepta...when was the last time you played this game and what are you playing now and why aren't you participating in that community?

Just kinda wondering what your motivation is for hanging around repeating the fact you don't like the game...even though you apparently played it quit a bit.

What was it that the devs promised that they didn't deliver. I've seen that comment about half a dozen times from several different posters but as of yet, no idea what it was.

Before December of 2007 it was announced that PAUS, Flashpoints and command opportunity were all coming soon.

PAUs were supposed to be different for each class and now TR is just getting a one size fits all Mech. Flashpoints became something else that failed to be what they were originally planned to be. The new version just became some go kill this or that mission when enough players end up in an area.

Command oppotunity was supposed to be the ability to lead, outfit and train your own squad of NPCs for high end content. CO was scrapped in March or April. These were three things announced as coming soon In December 2007, nearly a year later none of them made it in the game as what was supposedly almost ready to go a year ago,

Supposedly the devs were working on a planet called Mycon, thats the last we heard of that one.

Clan owned control points for PVE and PVP were almost ready to go in  July or August. Then it became PVP ones are almost ready and the PVE ones are on hold. So they took a game that was stated as PVE heavy with a little PVP and changed the focus, but by adding no factions or other playable races made PVP a story breaker for me.

Thank you for answering. At least one person here knows WTF they are on about.

Now the next question:

As I said much earlier in another post, I tried this game at launch and aside from the starter area switching directions...

What have the devs successfully done in the past year?

Was that the whole idea? If not, would you please cut us a little more slack to talk about what we wish to here. Thanks very much.

Read the RoC, link at the bottom of this page. I believe complaining about mods will get you in hot water also.

What you shoulda did was title the post something like 'Why the current generation of MMOs don't compare to the old" and then used AC as your primary example in the body of the post.

Persistant territory control? I only know of a few...

  • WAR - but from what I hear, people are not doing all that much RvR which I find odd. Even the PCGamer review cited that. Community - flavor of the month type. As soon as something else releases they will flock away....wait, I think WotLK is pretty much doing that.
  • Lineage 2 - Fight for castle control which also gives town control and taxation benefits. Has a stagnate and slowly declining community.
  • EVE - Need a star system? Invade. Healthy sized and active community
  • Planetside - dunno how many people actually still play this. Looks like a dead game.
  • DAoC - again, pretty much a dead game.
  • Piratess of the Burning Sea - national factions fight for control of ports. I think this one pretty much was dead on arrival.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. (minus any F2P which many have some sort of territory control aspect dunno if any of them are any good though.)

you misread my post, its not that im getting bored of the game. It's just knowing that cheaters will always be ahead in this game, and if you level legitly you will never catch up, unless you've been playing for 3 years straight.

You are were I was 2 years ago. I opted out. Now I just play L2 on and off for fun when the mood suits me.

No other game can give you what L2 does in terms of community and politics but the trade off is just to much cheating and BS.

I've never run across an MMO that just makes you want to be part of the world like L2 does.
