If Darkfall comes out with what it promises I can see a huge amount of population from AoC, WAR and WOW migrating over. On a personal level nearly all my friends are playing one game or another and there is one common theme going on. Each one wants to play DF more than anything else and will dump their game 'if' it comes out. |

People have already answered the other questions well but I thought i would add why I left the game and my thoughts on it. I played from launch and lasted about 6 months. I reached level 40 and level 45 in crafting. I loved crafting and if it wasn't for that I would have lasted 2 months. The game at launch was very unstable, loads of bugs and you needed a PC from NASA to play. I believe all of those issues are solved as a majority. The game has a very open world feel and its quite nice to see a cave open up into a massive dungeon. Play is a combo of single player quests vs team quests. I left because at 6 months the server was dead. I couldn't level unless I sat and grinded out the same mobs for hours. I couldn't find a group easily and I had better things to do than stand around for 2 hours screaming LFG! If the game has population I say try it out. It has some great concepts which are: In-depth crafting Diplomacy Crafting missions that give you better crafting items etc Open world Player housing Faction rating epic missions to gain unusual mounts.
PvP is a little one dimensional and generally speaking its the player with the first drop wins. Even 2 levels above you would cause massive imbalance. PvP felt like an after thought more than anything else. I prefer AoC over Vanguard because the PvP and feat trees means that each character is slightly different. I didnt like Vanguards system where you level and you have the exact same skills as every player playing the same character at the same level. Hope this helps

So have fun in WAR but try and post accurate information on other games please. |

First thing is, the last post doesnt really help because the game isn't dead for starters. I will try and give some key points on this game. I have been playing for 7 months since launch and I came close to quitting a few times. However the lack of anything else plus semi quick patches coming out kept me going. I am glad now because like most MMO's the 6 month mark has stabilised the game so its pretty much free of CTD's and any other annoying technical bug. As far as gameplay goes you can either go solo or group. This goes for PvP and PvE. I know because i have solo'd my way up to level 74 and I have also leveled up with a guild as well. Graphics, music and the general environment is the best in the MMO industry today as it stands. Combat post level 25 becomes quite in-depth and its nice to see an MMO that allows you to win fights based on what you do and be able to swing the tide. Crafting is more gathering than mini game. You just need to find the resources and complete a series of constructions to level up. I would like a Vanguard type mini game but its not as in-depth as that. However they are focusing on this area and have made some decent improvements recently. The game has instances but its funny how people complained about them and then asked for them because it became annoying having another group come in and steal the kills. The open areas vary from large to huge. There have been occasions where I have played for 5-7 hours and never seen a loading screen. You will need a decent PC to play the game properly. Missions vary between, 'kill 10 rats' type to some pretty interesting storylines. E.g. a storyline I found interesting was to hunt down 4 assassins and then find their leader and kill him. There is a single player storyline that has some pretty special moments. Mostly I dont mind the kill 10 rat type since the combat and fatalities are quite fun to watch. Its hard to say if the game is for you or not as it depends what parts you fancied in EQ. If you are a hard core crafter and want to do nothing else then the game may not be enough for you but as far as I am concerned there is plenty to do and after 7 months there is a lot I havent done still. Then again I dont play 20 hours a day either. Hope this helps.

I have to agree with the OP on this one and like the last post has stated a lot of people who played or playing WAR have played AoC as well. I stuck with AoC waiting for WAR to come out so I could conveniently jump on to that for the next 2 years and instead it lasted 3 weeks. The only option I had was to return to AoC and luckily enough there have been 2 massive patches that have really changed the game IMO. So Mythic lost a trick on this one because I have seen a very large increase in population in AoC and a lot of people I speak to tried WAR for 1 month then came back like me. I realised how decent AoC is after playing WAR for 3 painful weeks. Still gutted about how lame it is. Although I am playing AoC I still have my EVE account running which I struggle to sign in to these days as I dont have 3 hours in a row to play it. Darkfall and Jumpgate are my next great hopes. War = fail for this old gamer.

Sums up my thoughts 100%. I was anticipating WAR more than any other MMO and I have been playing MMO's since 2000 with another 16 years of gaming behind that. It has been the biggest disappoint to date but it could be due to my expectations being so high. Reiterating what a lot of other members are saying, the game in short is far too vanilla for me. Combat to narrow, death penalty means nothing and it feels like it was made for players who hate PvP because it seems way too easy. Beyond that I was a little surprised to see the average graphics and poor sound. I expected with all the marketing and glossy introduction videos the game would have at least addressed graphics etc. However I would say that if I could play in the same region as my close friends then I would probably stick it out for 2-3 months just so I could chat on TS. Now I am just focusing on the Indie titles coming out. Darkfall and Jumpage Evolution for me.

Nothing too exciting but I came across this blog from a new employee at NetDevil. Interesting to see that there are a fair few people there. Nice to see their Illustrators are 'amazing', maybe we are in for a treat with Jumpgate Evolution!
11.15.2008 The illustrators there are amazing. I hope their talent and ambition rubs off on me! The only downside to working in a building with 60-100 people is I got sick yesterday with a cold. Bleh. Time to stock up on Airborne. |

This is great news but nor surprising. Jumpgate has an existing fan base from the original game like me and its capturing the attention of gamers looking for a game that requires skill and real combat. Just shows an indie company with a small development team can attract a big audience, lets hope they can deliver the goods. |

I came to this conclusion after 2 weeks. I kept telling myself that I will enjoy the game if I stick with it. However the stark reality is that if I don't enjoy combat now then nothing the game does will make me enjoy it enough. I was tempted to resub for 1 month and see if I missed something but then I tried a keep siege and like the post you replied to it consisted of 20 of us running around in circles just out of range. So after 1 hour of gameplay (and game time is precious in my life) I decided to quit because Team Fortress 2 or even AoC I can get so much more fun out of them in the same amount of time. |

From some of my previous posts its obvious that I am not a fan of WAR. However I do think about it and wonder what they would have to bring into the game if I ever decided to come back. One key thing they missed in WAR was all the crazy fun stuff that you had with the table top game. e.g. Artillery randomness: * In the table top game artillery is a lot more powerful but a lot more volatile. Wouldn't it be amazing if the artillery in WAR could fire further and cause more damage but each time there is a chance of blowing you and the surrounding area up? Monster behaviour: * Like the Artillery I used to like seeing monsters out of control and could easily turn on their own side. Imagine if points contributed to a monster chart and when it maxed out a Dragon or Griffin appeared and went off causing havoc. However if damaged it would lose its mind and go rampaging? Unpredictable characters: In the table top there are many different type of units that are interesting and very unpredictable. They could add some crazy skills to characters that could have adverse affects on the user and allies. I just feel they concentrated too much on making the game 'safe' so it would appeal to a wider audience. However it feels too watered down with no soul. Why did they leave the quirky side of the table top game out? Give the gamers a bit of a laugh and bring in some random elements and generate a bit of life in the game! |

Just checked Xfire and WAR is now down to 11th and 28000 hours. about 2 weeks ago it was around 45000. Does this mean anything? Who knows but after the initial PQ's and scenario buzz wore off after 2 weeks the game has nothing. |

Originally posted by someforumguy For great crafting try Vanguard or Star Wars Galaxies. Both games give you the possibility to be a crafter first and adventurer second. Personally I would suggest Star Wars Galaxies because of its housing system, factories(which also have to be crafted) and player vendors. In the case of Star Wars Galaxies check first which servers are most active and find yourself a guild. Games like WoW/LOTRO and EQ2 also have crafting, but are more evolved around adventure and combat. Crafting is second grade (or even worse).
Even though I do not play Vanguard any more I have great memories of my crafting days there. In fact I would have crafted more than fought and that is a good sign. You gain levels in Crafting and there are missions you can complete to gain better items. The clothes you wear give you buffs as well as the type of tools. There is a mini game so making an item can be challenging if attempted too early. I liked it because I could sit on Vent or TS and chat to my mates while we all crafted away. A nice touch is when you are in a group you get to see what the other players are making to. Its such a shame I have not seen a crafting system like this again in other games. AoC could do with this for example. |

This is something I have thought about many times. I think a major development in MMO's would be the introduction of player created quests. Some games like EVE are getting there in some ways as you can do the following: * Create a contract to be filled or accepted. e.g. carry ore from one location to another. * Put a bounty on another players head. * Factional warfare that has missions pitching players against each other.
An MMO does not need a huge amount of missions to be interesting and I feel games like AoC could benefit by giving players the power to put bounties on other players, set up contracts for goods etc. Imagine having a game that allowed a player to build a house (I know there are some) but there were random events such as NPCs raiding your house. You could set up a contract for players to come and clear the raiders out. If crafting was in-depth enough you could have a contract for a master crafter to complete part of your project. So this may not be player made missions in the traditional sense but it does create a feeling that you have some influence over the world and if you gained XP for completing a contract etc. Then you could level purely by fulfilling player made 'missions' |

PvE is fine and is just as good as the rest of them out there. In fact a lot of the missions are really interesting and the graphics on some is pretty incredible. Plus there is a main storyline that you can interact with every 10-15 levels and that really helps develop your characters path in a role play sense. Don't rule out playing on a PvP server though. I would recommend a RP one as the PvP seems to be more sensible. Not sure how you feel about PvP servers but I like the challenge and tension of getting through the PvE content and watching out for evil players. |

Can't agree more. I quit after 3 weeks because the PvP has been made for people who DONT like PvP. Its a nice way to get involved in PvP and not really be concerned about dying. For me I prefer a much hard core version PvP and one that has actual meaning. |

Even though there are the 10 kill missions all over the place there are a couple of factors that make a difference. 1. Combat is brutal and with fatalities its a lot more realistic. Pass level 20 your skill set will be quite different so you can really change the way you fight against different mobs. 2. The scenery in which you do it is quite breathtaking and the music is still turned on even after 6 months. Its some of the best sounds I have heard in a game. On PvP. PvP has come a long way and with mini games that you can jump into now there are options for the casual PvPer as well. They have just brought in a new system which has given meaning to PvP and there are consequences as well. I like PvP in the game because I have been jumped and still managed to win against players my own level. I love the hide ability in the game and on occasion I enjoy hiding in a busy area and waiting for a gank guild member to turn up so I can back stab them. I played WAR for just 3 weeks. RvR was not good enough for me and the PvE is mindless. AoC has single player storyline that goes up to level 80 and a lot more thought has gone into it. Am I saying its the best game ever? No but it has had my sub for 6 months and will do for the forseeable future. |

I disagree. I think the game is perfect for a couple. I have played for quite a while but the entire time I wished I had one of my mates playing to. 2 people can really do 90% of everything except for the big instances and if you play 2 very different classes you can really mix up the combat. If you have 2 decent PC's the graphics and music will blow you away and its a very pretty game. Without knowing the kind of games you really enjoy its hard to say but AoC is definitely a much better game when playing in a pair.

I sometimes go back to the video because I love some of the gameplay in it. Climbing on board a ship then taking over is just nuts. If the game delivers 50% of what it promises then it will be a hit. |
