http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html "Actually, we have been discussing new battlegrounds quite a bit lately. Wrath of the Lich King will feature Strand of the Ancients (attack/defend) as well as Wintergrasp (non-instanced, world PvP). But past that, we are exploring ideas that would involve expanding our Battleground content in future patches and beyond. We believe we have some strong ideas for improving Battlegrounds and PvP as a whole in the game and we're definitely going to focus on improvements in the future. Now, it's very early to be talking about some of this stuff but I think it's important for the community to know that it's on our minds. Our general thought is that we could provide more BG content over time. The BG content that we could provide could be of higher quality with a higher degree of accessibility. Overall, we'd like to have more content and variety. We also want the gameplay experience in the BGs to be better directed. We're also exploring the concept of a complimentary "competitive" bg system as well. Over time, we'd like the focus of PvP to shift back to being more BG-centric and more focused on Horde versus Alliance -- the core of our game. We're also planning on improving some Battleground and PvP features in general. For example, we want to give you the ability to queue for Battlegrounds from anywhere in the world. We're also going to explore EXP gain through the PvP system as well as low level itemization to support that. Please don't take this post as a promise. This won't be an overnight process. Not all of these things are set in stone and guaranteed to happen. It would take us a while to shift in this direction. But these are some of the current thoughts on the development team. I think it's important for you guys to know some of our thought process in regards to PvP."

I come here |
Sounds like they know what's wrong with PvP, but I don't know why they didn't fix these things now (and get rid of this ridiculous Arena system) instead of "some time in the distant future". |

I honestly don't see a solution either. They could certainly finesse the item requirements towards BGs a bit more (more tokens, less arena points etc). But I think the big worry of the devs is a valid one.. in BG's, you really don't have to pull your own weight. I'm not even talking about AFKing, I'm talking about people (like myself sometimes) who just run with the pack, cast spells, and just try to stay alive and suck up HK's. With the way BGs are set up, there just isn't an easy way to reward people for winning without bringing along a ton of near-afkers. It's similar back with the 40man raids where you could easily have 5-10 people just along for the ride. The reason so much is focused on arena isn't some grand money grab scheme of Blizzard, it's simply that it is easy to quantify people who are exceling.. BGs just don't have that mechanism yet. I think when Blizzard does find a way to seperate the best BGers in a reasonable manner, they will drastically reduce the prominance of Arena ratings on gear. BGs are one of my favorite things to do, I hope someday they figure out how to reward for them properly... but even I realize giving the best gear for tokens/honor is a mistake that will just lead more people to near-afk. |

I read this to basically mean that they are going to be adding BG content in the future which is a smart move on their part as some of the bg's / arenas are probably getting stale for folks. With the expansion content most folks will be focusing on that for the next 6 months so it gives Blizzard plenty of time to create new pvp content and keep folks happy. I don't buy the pvp "improvements" though. Blizzard has been using this same line for years and pvp still has issues. The hardest thing for them to accomplish is true class balance in pvp situations. It's hard for any game to accomplish this but in a pve centric game it can be more of a challenge because the classes are focused to take down pve content. Transitioning that focus to class vs. class battles is exremely difficult. I see them trying to make changes but I don't see them being able to vastly improve the pvp in the game. It's lipservice and nothing more. |

No pvp game can 'balance' classes even without a pve environment. It requires way to much fine-tuning and there are too many factors involved. If you are talking about 1v1 then just forget about it. A game should never even attempt to balance around that. When you talk about stuff like WSG, AB and EotS.. things are pretty well balanced. As long as you don't go off on your own all the time, any class can have reasonable success. Once you start getting down to 5v5, it's just too easy for class synergies, one CD, or one minor tactic to win the day. If a mage Pom/pyro is up, he wins, if a Pallys lay on hands is up, he wins, the ability to heal while running.. druids win... They can fine tune all they want, but as long as the game has abilities with long CDs and powerful effects, the fine tuning won't matter. The same thing is true with rogues.. if they get me from behind, I rarely win, if I see them in advance, they rarely win. The larger the battle gets, the less fine tuned classes need to be for pvp. That is one of the problems with Arena.. in 5v5 classes can never be balanced without taking away their differences. Rogues can't stealth, Druids lose HOTs, PoM needs to go and you end up with bland classes. The new Normandy Battleground is awesome and so is Lake Wintergrasp. They are both large scale, and tactics that are available to everyone (seige weapons) mean as much as individual abilities. |

No it doesen't, if best rewards went to those who did most damage, noone would EVER defend the base while the rest are going on the attack. |
