Star Trek Online News - GDC 2010: New Playable Factions Coming

Posted by Michael Bitton on Mar 12, 2010  | 29 comments in our forums

The folks at Massively spoke to Star Trek Online Executive Producer Craig Zinkievich at this year's Game Developers Conference and managed to score some tasty information: new playable factions will be coming to Star Trek Online this year.

So what factions are coming? They aren't sure yet, though Craig does admit many of the development team are interested in introducing Romulans to the game:

There's a huge amount of the dev team right now interested in doing Romulan. I think the Borg would be really interesting as just something totally different, totally different gameplay. There are a lot of really cool mechanics, a lot of really cool things you can do there. Really, if you're in the MMO for the long haul, there are going to be a lot more playable factions, you can't stop with those two. There's Jem'Hadar, you're going to be going to the Dominion, there's Cardassians [...] so many playable factions that we can and will be releasing with the game.

Craig also dated the next major update for Star Trek Online for this July, which will be followed by yet another large update possibly around November.

Via Massively.

Long haul? I'd say at least two.

New playable races should be one of the last things on their minds. They have so many things to improve and fix as it is that jumping to something cosmetic seems trivial right now. In 2 yrs maybe. But at least they have some kind of plan I suppose.

Unfortunately it will just be more of the same with green tinted Romulan lighting. Nothing can save the game at this point, it's too fundamentally flawed at it's base. Biggest waste of $50 I spent in a long time.

The only (semi) redeeming part of the game is the space combat mechanics but without being mated to a fun game it's not worth a subscription much less the client purchase. Sold alone as a $10 shareware space combat sim it might have been worth a purchase.

Why why why couldn't someone besides Cryptic have got the license?

Playable factions aren't "cosmetic"; you're thinking of playable RACES.  This is a new faction with all new content.  New content would be good.

Seeing as how the Klingon faction isn't close to being done, I can understand folks cynicism, though.

The real question is are these factions going to have episodic content like the Fed or are they going to put in like the Klingons were with a false twist of "doing something new" like so many here *cough* tried to pass off. THat's the million dollar question. Either way I won't be subscribed (canceling my sub in the next few days) as since I've done the fed side (and again, I don't do alts) I haven't played the game in like a week and a half. I was going to give them 1 month of sub fee, which I did on the 6th, to see what they had planned for this month's big release. When I saw it was once mission line that's I'd finish in a day or two and the goal was then to rinse and repeat it, well, that's when I decided that what they are offering isn't enough for me to continue to pay them a monthly fee. Maybe for some folks, and that's ok. Not for me.

I bet it gets delayed by six months.

Also, my vote for the next playable faction is KLINGONS.

I see what you did there!

It saddens me that STO is such a terrible game.  No developer should take Star Trek and treat it like that...nor should they take the MMORPG genre and do what they did to it twice in a 5 months!

Here here! Let's have that crazy faction we're at war with as Playable!

They should be focusing on revamping the ground combat gameplay and adding some actual content to the Klingons side instead of introducing new races. They haven't even finished the base game yet.

Focus on quality not quantity.

How about they finish working on the Klingons, ground combat, and the development of an open PvP area instead.

So Cryptic is working on a new faction and its content. For crying out loud. When are they going to fix the current content? It needs more interesting PvE, fix PvP, fix Klingon,  redo exploration and much more. I understand that there is a need for a new faction or two, but fix what you got now and then move on. If Cryptic continues this trend, they will lose most of there subscriber base and be forced to make it a free MMO if not completely shut it down. I wouldnt be surprised that Atari put them in this situation in the first place. After all, I give Atari there new motto, "Push, Rush, and Bail."

They have so much to fix before adding anything every time they say they are going to "fix or patch in content" it's like bottom of the cookie jar crap content. I personally along with so many others just lost respect for atari/cryptic trying to pawn this game off as a capable mmo is just a laughing joke.

I doubt they can correct the crappy pvp and content patch before they lose 65%+ of the player base who tried to ride out a extra month to see what gets corrected and the future plans cryptic had in mind. Maybe in 4-5 months of hard work by them they can come up with a damn game thats worth playing for over a week, but I doubt it. The game is just lacking.......SOUL it's a empty shell of a mmo that could have been a good time, sadly was turned into a money grab.

At the rate they are going I see it imploding in about 2-3 months sidelined like poor old aion ( at least aion has content and semi-workable pvp ) down to either full scale fail, or hopping along with little dev love like a dog with 1 leg, it's only a matter of time before owner atari puts it down after that screwing all them life time sub people.

Oh almost forgot and have yet to see much mention on it is I read that note in the fine print of the press release saying NEW LIFETIME subscription perks.......gotta be kidding me.

Honestly they made there money back, or soon to,and after that imo they wont give much of a rats ares about STO and just do minor things to it to try and keep what subs they have. They will start development of another mmo, release it and do the same thing they did with CO and STO. as many other stated its pretty sad when an IP this big was given to such a closed minded and shady (IMo) studio. lets hope they dont get their hands on any other IP. Hate to say it ,but to bad one of EAs companies did not pick it up....

I can't decide if Zinkievich is really an upbeat con artist who tells people what they want to hear or someone who is seriously self-deluded.  A new faction is not just something you pull off a shelf and attach onto a game. The Klingons were hastily tacked on in the final stages of beta and are woefully lacking in content. Now they plan to add another in short order?

I see these breezy promises as nothing more than an admission of the shallowness of the game and Cryptic's intention to offer more of the same.

Cryptic is completely owned by Atari, they can't make Cryptic do anything because Cryptic already shares the same goals and ideas that Atari has.

This is insane.  Their existing factions are hardly complete, but instead of finishing what they started they're already moving on to more factions?  And one of them is fanboi- I mean playable borg?

Fix the genesis system so it isn't a repetitive grindfest.  Introduce some REAL exploration and diplomacy.  Make the PVP meaningful to the overall story of the game, and not just an instance that has no effect on the rest of the galaxy.

I don't recall anyone saying "they need more factions!" unless you think "where is Klingon content?" means "they need more factions."

Edit: Also they game wasn't even out yet more than a month ago, so as Saerain said people didn't even know what state the game was in yet.

I recall many people wanting several other factions like Borg, Romulan, Cardassian, Ferengi etc. This was during the development of the game and people were mad during beta because of it. Yes people were disappointed when Klingons were playable but didn't have their own "content". All I am saying is people tend to whine on these forums and just like to be miserable I guess. People would be complaining if crytpic did nothing and people are complaining that cryptic is going to add new stuff soooo....yeah some of you are already condemning the game regardless of what cryptic does or say they are going to do. I guarantee the same will happen with other mmos like SWTOR...just wait and see.

You are wasting your time and effort. The people you argue with here are the sort that would tell their younger brother / sister that Santa Claus is a murderer. They don't like christmas anymore so why should anyone else, right?

They are the "piss on your fireworks" brigade. The only news coming from cryptic that they would meet with joy is word of bankruptcy.

Funny.  Actually, news that would be met with joy would be that Cryptic is adding in exploration and diplomacy.... you know, like they said they would when they first announced the game, and hyped all the way through the development cycle only to completely drop the ball on.

FYI I wasn't one of those people who wanted more factions off the bat.  It would be a good idea not to lump everyone into one category based on the singular point of disliking the game.
