I am going on the record. I think The Old Republic will be a RPG and not an MMO. Biowares MMORPG will be a fantasy based game.
It certainly makes sense. No use risking such a huge project as an MMO.Anyways, in either case, I'm not hyped about this. But I AM definately curious as to the outcome.
For those who get what they wanted from this announcement tomorrow, I give you my congratulations. And for those who didn't, you get my sympathies.
Whatever the outcome of the announcment guys, just don't take it out on Bioware. They are a business after all.
Business is always about risk and what better studio to handle a KOTOR mmo than the developer of KOTOR.
If this was a fantasy MMO, the graphic on the invitation would look fantasy-esque. You'd have to be blind not to see it's KOTOR.
Ahhh.... but the invite does not say that it's an MMO at all does it? So you assume that it is because of all the hype. It could be just a KOTOR 3 RPG.
Might not be an MMO, but I would lean towards the announcement tomorrow being that it is.
2 things
1. massively.com got an invite, and they are strictly an MMO info site.
2. PC Gamer is putting it on their cover, and if it was an RPG, it'd be on console, and later ported to PC, as is Biowares and Lucasarts recent history.
Could still be an RPG and not an MMO, but I think it's an MMO...is it starwars, who knows, but the postcard did look very starwarsy and iconic ![]()

I'll go on the record as the opposite. I think it is an MMO.
Here is the final reason. PC Gamer is having the project on the cover of the Nov. 11th issue. if it was an RPG and not an MMO, it would be strictly console, at least to start with, as thats Biowares history.
Obviously circumstantial, like most everything else, but I think it'll be an MMO. As for "The old Republic" well, nobody know what the name of this thing is gonna be.
So I guess they could do both, a "the old republic" rpg, and an MMO, but I think tomorrows announcement will be an MMO, and most likely TOR.

So, this is entirely a subjective question, that I understand, however would a new player have any fun in SWG?
I tried Everquest II, and it was.. blah. I liked the vareity of classes, and the imagry, but I couldn't get into the whole reason (I didn't want to read the tired quest dialog.. but I guess that's in every game now..). Even early in the game.. it felt like I was searching for the "ding".
I play WAR as my main game. I have a good time.. and I can just PvP. I don't have to do anything else. Just.. fight other players. The PvE in that game is lacking. The PQ's are just another form of grind with reward attached (which really sucks) and are starting to show their poor design (the though is good, but they don't address the lack of players at certain intervals to actually completely do a PQ). The quests are.. laughable..
Basically what I want to know is: If I insteall SWG, will I find myself reading about the game when I can't play.. or will I find myself uninstalling it?
Since you wanted an opinion, and not a suggestion to "try the game and decide yourself..."
Everyone is beating around the bush so as not to be labeled a "vet", which apparently is a bad thing here. Anyway, from a completely subjective point of view, the answer is no.
You'll log on, have fun for about 2 weeks, and then get bored of doing the same thing over and over again with no one around. The trial is the only finished part of the game.
If by some chance, you do stay, because "the game begins at 90" and you can PVP, you'll find that without buffs, you'll be owned.
Play WoW if you are thinking about playing the current incarnation of SWG. It may be fantasy, and the graphics may be cartoony, but it's full of people to quest with, finished and bug free. Myself, I don't play either anymore, but can see why people enjoy WoW.
/sigh
So very Starwarsy and iconic.
I guess my worst fears would be that it's not an mmo at all.
What is your favorite fantasy character type?
