However, I did have a big complaint about DAoC. Why, oh why, do I have to wait to get to the fun part of the game, the PvP?

If we take the above idea into context regarding OP's statement, most of these places were not around when the game originally launched
It took quite a while for them to put in Thidranki battle ground and Demons Breech was added when Catacombs was released. I think instead of Scenarios the should have kept the DAoC style of BG where it was open and persistent. No cap on people, and there was a keep in the middle people would fight over.
What I believe they're asking of you is to state if you like heavy group play, roleplaying, player versus player competition, if you would just like to kill AI monsters and advance through gathering of all kinds of loot, how much time you have to play and how much you're willing to dedicate to the game. That sort of stuff.
Now using the above, try again. ![]()

All I want is a virtual world with a common theme where I can play a role with others in a shared fiction. It doesn't have to have the best quests, but it has to be immersive. I don't want to have to deal with RMTs, clans, loots, DPS, DKPs, headsets, virtual property lawsuits, powergamers, bots, and metagaming. I just want a virtual world with a common theme where everyone plays a role within it for the simple joy of making it happen.
Why can't I get what I want? I had it before. I know I'm not alone, because other folks enjoyed the exact same things I did.

This is pretty much what I'm looking for to.
I just want to be an average citizen in an online community, and not an archetypical hero based on someone else's preconceived ideas.
Like you I want to carve my own path. I wouldn't mind if the game threw me into the world with nothing more then a loin cloth and a stick and let me take it from there. It's not all the time that I want to be the dragons slaying hero. Sometimes I want to be that thieving bastard that picked your pocket or broke into your house, and to take this idea further I'd like to be a craftsman of some kind deep in the remote reaches of the wilderness making exquisite items that are hard to come by and having a select few players find my cabin for whom I can make these rare items.
I would like a hybrid system. I enjoy PvP and I'd say it makes up at least 50% of what I do in MMO's so if the PvP was lacking it would definitely be a downer for me. On the flip side though there are times where I don't feel like PvP'ing and just want to find a corner somewhere and kill mobs with a friend or 2 and that's where the PvE kicks in. A hybrid system would cater to my liking of competition and exploration. Giving me the opportunity to socialize with the other people is a very nice bonus as well.
I too enjoyed the combat in Mount and Blade, however the game began to wear on me after a while and now I've shelved it for a while and perhaps will go back to it one day.
In regards to MMORPG's I liked the way DAoC did it. There were things to think about when you were fighting in regards to your position relative to the opponent, the kind of weapons you were using and how that would affect the armor the enemy was wearing. Everything had a strenght and a weakness and it had to be taken into account if you really wanted to get the most out of combat be it ranged, melee or magical.
