Biography

I enjoy games. The best game ever, will be the one that can give us the life we wish we had. In that perhaps life itself is a game. After all, is dating not a game of ballance, to show interest, yet not overpower. Work is a game of getting done and leveling up another promotion. Once you are a master of that class, you start thinking of what you are missing. Perhaps you reroll and start a new class. Ah yes, life is a game, but one we always lose. So unto the developer that can discover what life is like when we win, you have the ultimate game. Can I beta?

Latest Blog Entry - Equipment is taking over the character
From my blog Equipment vs. Skills [Lazer7]

Everquest, World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings... What do these games and many more have in common? Over zealous equipment. For the last 5 or more years, the equipment has been defining our characters. From a chest piece that doubles the base stats, a sword that increases the attack speed by 40 percent, a pair of boots that makes a person immune to roots, to a cloak that adds large numbers to all of our stats. Where is the line drawn on equipment?

Since the rampant increase of equipment bonuses, boss fights without better gear drops are even skipped, unless forced to fight. Sure, it is fun to go deep into a dungeon or instance, and get my hands on the newest and best loot. However, this should not be a deciding factor on a challenge. Take a moment and picture what your character is using and wearing. Now, imagine all your bonuses reduced to merely 50 percent, half, of what it currently is. Your suddenly feel helpless, weak, and incapable. Just as an example, a cleric in Everquest can more than triple the amount of mana he or she has, just with equipment. In World of Warcraft, you can gain about 4 times or more any stat by focusing on the gear for it. Some games have developed so far that without your equipment, you can barely defeat a mob 30 levels below you. Is this what we have reduced our gaming experience to?

In a perspective, this is turning our gaming experience into a button mashing contest. There is no need to use all our skills, if our gear makes us unhittable, uncatchable, and undefeatable. In return, are we being slighted on the amount of skills that we have, due to our equipment being our safety net. Why give us powerful skills, if we can just add 190 damage with a enchanters buff on our weapon, or something equivalent.

Guild Wars... This is one of the few games still on the market, that has reborn the idea of skills above equipment. Just imagine what a game with the size, graphics, and UI of WoW, but with the skill/equipment concept of Guild Wars, could be like. To rely on our own judgment and timing of skills that is provided to us, rather than the fact that stats are so buffed, I could not possibly fail.

A long time ago, games were more in moderation, and I believe that it was from that moderation that made Ultima Online one of our favorites.

    • I enjoy leveling more then one toon.
    • I am getting close to having 4 50's, with a Hunter, Minstrel, and Burglar all level 50, and a 46 Gaurdian. I enjoy the way that each class holds their own. The Mins has the hardest time, but it is still a blast. I am planning on a Lore Master for my 5th.

    • Customer care, so rarely reviewed
    • While I am not saying what you typed is not true, I have not had the same experience. The support team online have been very fast to respond, and helped out a lot. There was recently a change to the squiddie fight in Carn Dum, and it caused the boss to bug. The response I got was fast, and explained it is being worked on, and a description of how to avoid the bug.

The support in LotRO is one of the best I have experienced. The forums are full of complainers that want things easy, however. I would not recommend focusing on them for the true situation. Thus the take over of Populs. Long Live Populs!

    • LoTR best grahics in MMO's....not a well known fact.
    • The graphics of LotRO are good, but they are not the amazingly best. I actually find that it reminds me of Neverwinter Nights. The game has some of the best scenes however. I love to go up the top of the pass into Rivendell, or to Ever-Swim, and look at the view. I am looking forward to the up-coming improvements, once Mines of Moria comes out.

Also remember, these games use different schemes, and that makes it difficult to compare the templates.

Your desperate repeated attempts on trying to tell how wonderful everything really is, tells a different story.

I quit LOTRO several months ago, and would love to check it out today. But only 5 days trial, that's a bad joke. Heck, I finished TWO MONTHS free "welcome back" EQ2 time (Living Legacy campaign) a few days ago.

Everquest 2 was doing their episode to draw people in. LotRO is actually multi-puprosing this. The expansion is going to be released soon, and a lot of people are going to be coming back anyways. They did this 5 days, mainly to see how the server will hold with a huge influx. It is a smart way to go about it, I believe.
