    • How come EQ II doesn't attract more players?
    • Well I have been in and out of this game since beta.  I am currently subscribed and playing.  I find there are a few things that this game has that cause poeple to leave on a regular basis.

The first thing is the reputation that Sony has in the MMO community.  They own the biggest mistake in gaming history, namely the CU / NGE disaster of SWG.  In that case you had a very loyal and interested fan base that was playing a very unique game.  The developers wanted to capture some of the WOW market and drastically changed the game several times.  This was viewed by the vocal majority and an epic failure and the shock wave can still be felt to this day.  IN fact MMORGP.com had to start an "I'm angry at SOE flame thread" for every game this company puts out.  Some people will not go near a Sony game for this reason and they have friends that have friends and so on.

The second reason is that the developers change the game on a regualr basis.  I have been back over a month and so far there have not been any huge changes and this surprises me a great deal.  The developers use to alter the game a lot on a regualr basis.  While all games change and evolve, the Sony developers dropped the ball on a regular basis and some people just don't like to invest time in a game to see their hard work nerfed out of existance.

The third reason is they tend to release a lot of expansions in a very short time.  Instead of releasing one major expansion they prefer to release a lot of smaller ones and charge for each one.  This gets old fast.  In contrast, other games provide updates and upgrades for free.  Sony does do a lot of things in the game for free also but this is overshadowed by the constant marketing blitz for their latest expansion.  They will usually offer a bundle deal for new players at a much lower price than existing players can buy the new content for.

Finally I think that in the past, Sony showed little interest in the customer base.  They were more interested in making you like what they put out rather than exploring what we wanted.  People have a choice and this tactic will not work for long.  They use to have the worst customer service bar none.  Since I have returned to the game I have found just the oposite to be true now.  Customer service will bend over backwards to help you in the game today.  I have only used them once and was amazed at the level of service and how much it has come up.

Overall, if you have not played EQ2 you are missing one of the best MMOs ever produced and a ton of content.  I am glad I came back and I see evidence that perhaps Sony has finally gotten a handle on some of the flaws that have held this title back for years.  I play on the PVP server and it is a blast.

    • Well if you look at the second guy's other posts, he/she mainly gets on MMORPG.COM to talk about politics.  LOL!

If you can't appreciate the fact that SOE traditionally nerfs their games all the time (like it is a big secret or something) then go play a different game, there are a ton of them out there.  If you think that removing some of the boring grind part of a game is making it easy then go play L2 or any one of the trillion cookie cutter Asian grinders on the market today.

Some of us have real world lives and it is nice being able to make progress in a game and still being able to have a life.  That is why they have rested XP.  If you want to play long hours every day then you will progress along on single XP and if you just play a few days you will be on double xp or you can even turn the XP off if you want to wait for a friend to catch up.

The goal of playing a game is to have fun.  Hard does not equal fun.  Challenge is what you want and the challenge is still in the game.  Getting to end game is still there, they just took out some of the boring repetion.  So now you have to kill a few less mobs to get to the end.  They were not the reason you played in the first place.  If you want to make the game longer then why not just stop once an hour and write "I killed a mob" on a piece of paper a 1000 times and then resume gameplay.  It will make it harder but won't change the game a bit in content and maybe it will restore what you truly signed up to do in the first place.

    • Returning after a few years and have some questions
    • Yes, it will not have an option for it.  If you start a new account you will not have to put in any CC info (in fact I didn't even put an email address in) and it takes only a few seconds to process.

I have been all over the place so you are not restricted to the starter area and there does not seem to be a level cap either so far (I am lvl 13) so I will continue to play for at least the 14 days.

I played EQ for years then EQ2 at launch and they I really got into SWG and got station access and the whole 9 yards.  Then SOE ruined the SWG experience for me and I was so bent that I canceled everything.  Even now there is something in me that says don't do it as long as SOE is in charge but I am trying to forget about it and have fun.

I love the graphics and it runs perfect at high settings on my machine.  The whole game seems to have gotten better and now I have links to some good sites for information so I can read up on builds and quests and such.  I am on the PVP server and have yet to get ganked!

If you get on and want to send a tell my toon's name is angelion.

    • Returning after a few years and have some questions
    • Ok I played at launch for the first year and had a few toons of high level at that time.  Now I am looking at the game again and signed up for the 14 day trial.  As it was only for new accounts I had to start a new station account in order to do the trial.  Things have changed quite a bit since I last played and I am thinking about starting up a sub when this trial is over.

My question is will I still have my old toons from when I first started.  I don't know if they keep them or if I will have to start over.  The server I use to play on (Unrest) is not even on the list anymore.  I have no way of getting into the account without resubbing so I am a little lost on this.

If I have to start over then I will just stay with my new account since I already have a level 11 beserker that I am really enjoying.  I am on the PVP server as I played on one in WOW and liked it better that the PVE servers.  Is it open PVP or just in contested zones?  Can you PVP other players from your side or just the oposing side?

I remember that I use to be able to sell from my house but had to stay online to sell.  Have they changed this (do they have an auction house?).  As I am doing the trial I don't have an instruction manual.  I have the original manual taht came with my collector's edition from years ago but it seems there have been so many changes that it is worthless for most questions.  Can anyone recommend a good site for builds and such and quest help (like thottbot).
