An Exclusive Marvel Games Development Deal Was Almost Microsoft’s

The series that Sony has cashed in on big time is Spiderman. The IP has sold more than twenty million copies since it launched in 2018. Now it has Spiderman 2 and a Wolverine game to come. Sony seems to be cashing in big time on something Microsoft was offered first.

Apparently the Activision tie-in for Amazing Spiderman left Marvel unhappy with the quality of said title and they mutually ended the license. Activision asked what would happen with the IP rights to which Marvel said they would find a better home. That is a total slap in the face but, the tie-in game wasn’t really that good.

Marvel games went to Microsoft at that time trying to emerge with an exclusive rights deal. They decided to pass on the opportunity to work on their own unique IP content. Sony swooped in on the Spiderman rights specifically and that is where the buck stopped. They gave their pitch for a AAA title and we received Spiderman. With Insomniac Games heading the creation of the title we know what happened.

We are stepping into the future of Marvel Games with Sony at the helm and I know a lot of people who are waiting for the Wolverine game. I am one of them.
