PlayStation Plus gets a shiny relaunch today and a new blog post on the Sony site should hopefully explain what we’re about to get in the reshuffle and when it’s coming.
If you’re still trying to work out how exactly PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus fit together in a subscription service playing catchup with the Xbox Game Pass service, then take a seat. Even after an initial announcement explaining the upcoming revamp of Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscription service, a lot of questions remained about the plans. With the launch of the brand new PlayStation Plus service in Asia today, we’re getting a bit more clarity on what consumers can get for their hard-earned cash.
The brand new subscription offering for PlayStation customers will be available in three tiers. Split across Essential, Extra, and Premium services this membership offers a range of online options that span everything from the traditional cloud save payment to a game streaming service to rival game Pass. For each of the various options, you’ll get a range of extras, although it seems the model we’re all most used to is packaged under the Essential tier. The remaining tiers include access to a PS4 and PS5 game catalog while throwing more money at the screen will
unlock classic PlayStation remasters, cloud streaming, and game trials. Sony outlines the breakdown in the chart below.
The full price lowdown of what is to come varies by market but starts at $9.99 / €8.99 / £6.99 / ¥850 per month right through to $17.99 / €16.99 / £13.49 / ¥1,550. Around 700 games will be available from trials of Horizon Zero Dawn Forbidden West through to classics like Ape Escape, while Ratchet & Clank also make an appearance. An expanded list can be found on a separate PlayStation post. Anybody looking to grab the service will be able to keep checking back through June 2022 as it rolls out globally. America can expect the revamp on 13 June and Europe, Australia, and New Zealand can sign up on 23 June 2022.
While it’s pretty clear this seems to be more of a reshuffle than a revamp, we’re going to be checking out the changes when they go live. It might be worth noting that, according to the blog, “Existing PlayStation Now members will transition to PlayStation Plus Premium, with no increase to their current subscription fees at launch”.
