I would like to think of myself as a person who has a descent ear for sound. Don’t misread that – I don’t claim to have perfect pitch or hearing. However, I have, by necessity, worked on training my ears to hear nuance and musical parts. It’s part and parcel of being a bassist and guitarist with a responsibility to pick out and learn different parts of songs on both ends of the frequency spectrum. Because of this background, average headphones will not due. The headphones in review today are definitely not average. This is our review for the BassFit Wireless Sport Earphones by V-MODA.

If you are not familiar with V-MODA, their fifteen year history as a designer headphone brand has held a number of “firsts” for the brand. From being considered the first fashion headphone to the first 3D printed custom metal headphones, V-MODA has dedicated themselves to be nothing if not extraordinary in both form and function. In recent history, the brand has struck up a partnership with electronic music instrument behemoth, Roland, with the goal of enhancing their shared passion for the creation and enjoyment of music.

Before we dive into the sound, let’s break down how these tick.

The V-MODA BassFit has to be one of the more customizable pairs of earphones on the market. Packaged with 4 different sizes of interchangeable ear tips, 3 Sport Fin sizes, and detachable ear hooks, the V-MODA BassFit wireless earphones are designed to fit just about ear shape, ear size, or situation that you may be using them in.

They have a wire clip to help adjust the length to your neck and magnets build into the side of the earphones. If you need to take your earphones off, they will stick to each other, providing a secure connect to keep them around your neck. They also comes with a padded bag for ease of storage.

Within this cable attaching the earphones together, you will find a three button control system along with the charging port and an LED for power indication. These buttons can be used in combination with each other to serve different functions. While the center button powers on and off the device (with a pleasant chime, I might add), using it in concert with the top button will summon you digital assistant (Siri, Google). When paired with the button button, this will make the BassFit available for pairing with a new device. Interestingly, the V-MODA BassFit can be paired with two devices at the same time.

The build quality of this switch feels a bit out of place with the rest of the design of the BassFit. Where the earphones feel durable and purposefully crafted with the brand’s vision in mind, the switch just does not. The plastic and the rubber buttons used makes that portion of the headset feels like an afterthought to the rest of the construction.

This is a bit of a letdown because, aesthetically, the rest of the BassFit has a very distinguished look that carries across the V-MODA brand. Its hard lines paired with subtle curves gives it contrast that speaks to their desire to stand out without being flashy while the stark contrast of colors reinforces their classy look. The pair that we reviewed were a sleek black design with orange branding and accents, but the BassFit also come in white with grey accents.

From a technical standpoint, the Qualcomm aptX and ACC codecs ensure that you will get the best possible wireless sound for that platform through them. Whether you are using them with an iOS, Android, MacOS, or Windows platform, the BassFit has you covered. Unfortunately, much like the Mpow Flame we reviewed in the past, the V-MODA BassFit are not compatible with the PlayStation 4.

The challenge with any set of headphones that boasts any type of bass enhancement is to provide a soundscape with a good range of audio articulation while maintaining a balanced bass presence. Too much and the sound is muddy; too little and it is anemic.  After putting it through my typical battery of tests, listen for high-, mid-, and low-range responses among symphonic score, technical rock tracks, EDM, and funk, the BassFit do just that. They provide a clear range of sound without losing any bass presence.

When it comes to battery life, the V-MODA BassFit does not have a lot of quit in them. The advertised 11 hours of battery life checks out. They have proved to be an incredible companion in the gym, around the house, and while cleaning up nearly two feet of snow from three snow storms… and they are still going! As an added bonus, they are equipped with a Quick Charge option which provides two hours of battery life with fifteen minutes of charge. Not bad if you find yourself in a pinch for power.

Overall, V-MODA delivers a high quality audio experience with great audio fidelity, but at a cost. The BassFit compares with the price point of many well-known brands, while providing a measure of versatility for how you use them. The different sizing options are great, but I found the ear hooks to be incredible uncomfortable in their stiff design.

If you are looking for a set of wireless earphone that will deliver good sound quality, a modicum of noise cancelation, and depth of sound, the V-MODA BassFit may just be a piece of gear to consider for your mobile needs.

Pros:

  • Great sound quality
  • High battery life with Quick Charge
  • Highly customizable to fit the user
  • Sleek design

Cons:

  • Detachable ear hooks are very stiff, uncomfortable
  • In-line controls feel off brand
