There’s a new MMO in the works and this upcoming co-op adventure is set to put a bit of a chill in you when Annex launches next year.
Codenamed Annex and due to arrive in 2023 and helmed by veterans from CCP and EA, the latest name on the MMOI ‘coming soon’;’ list is looking like it might very well stand out from the crowd. Players who are interested in this new concept can forget anime avatars and high fantasy arks. Instead, this title, the game takes place in a persistent, single-shared world where nature has taken over the remnants of a long-vanished civilization. Like a classic survival sim, it is due to challenge players to search for resources, building infrastructure and solving logistical challenges.
While this sounds like a mix between Impact Winter and Last Oasis, developer Arctic Theory has already raised 2 million USD in funding from its initial seed round in early 2022 and is in talks with prospective publishing partners. The team behind this new name describe the incoming storm as a place where:
“Players will collaborate with one another to explore and harness the vast landscape and its resources,” explains Creative Director Gísli Konráðsson. “They’ll have to learn to create the tools required to harvest these resources and solve the logistics of transporting and utilizing them. Ultimately, every player contributes to a common goal. Whether a lone prospector in the wilderness or a team working to build a factory in a new settlement, the whole of the player base is working together to make their mark in this incredible world. We’re beyond excited to bring this step in the evolution of the MMO to gamers who love the genre as much as we do. It will be a wholly unique playing experience.”
