As you go through saving one world or galaxy at a time, have you ever stopped to think: “Man, I wish my character would have a significant other to help them out in this adventure”? Well, worry not: we have a list of games that would scratch that amorous itch.
Note: the games are listed in a non-ranked order and provide a choice from at least two suitors in addition to the epic story and gameplay. The romances in the list are optional choices and are not pre-scripted at the beginning of the game.

Baldur’s Gate I & II
Bioware’s classic, Baldur’s Gate series takes place in the fantasy world of Forgotten Realms. In 2012 the series was revitalized with Enhanced editions to work better with the current platforms and even on the iOS and Android devices.
The entirety of the series offers a dozen different romanceable characters. Eight for male protagonists and six for female ones, ten offer opposite-sex relationships and four offer same-sex relationships. Check out the Wiki page to learn everything there is about romances!
Next project from creators of the Witcher series, CDProjekt RED, takes us to the future. If you had expected it to be a bright one, I have bad news for you… However, under the neon signs of Night City, there is an opportunity for romance.
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
Developer Owlcat Games announced the second game in the Pathfinder RPG series: Wrath of the Righteous. As the game aims to be bigger, better and more epic than its predecessor, Kingmaker (also featured in this list), it will feature new romantic adventures for the protagonist to go on as well. The Kickstarter stretch & social goals saw the addition of two new romances with the party members as well as the possibility to pursue badass Paladin Queen Galfrey.
While not a direct sequel to the events of Pathfinder: Kingmaker, the previous project of the studio, the game keeps to the classic CRPG genre and expands and elaborates on the gameplay elements that defined Kingmaker. Wrath of the Righteous tells the story of a large-scale conflict between mortals and demons where players are invited to immerse themselves in a world under siege from demonic forces. As a vicious invasion threatens the world, the consequences of one’s decisions will forge a unique narrative of their personal battle between good and evil.
Liberate the land of Nevendaar and uncover the endless stories hidden within this richly detailed world where every decision has a consequence, and every wrong move could be deadly. Explore a rich overworld and align with a variety of in-world factions: from a human empire tinged by religious extremism to the dark forces of the undead lead by a mad queen. Assemble a team to gather precious resources, sway political standing, and take on brutal beasts in intricate turn-based battles.
Upcoming Games That Will Have Romance Options
Created by a team of ex-Bioware developers, The Waylanders is a classic group management RPG. Featuring innovative and tactical combat system, the game brings to life the legends of the once flourishing Celtic cultures. The Waylanders will provide players an engaging narrative featuring impactful character development, unique companion romance options, and a deeply technical combat system. Are you a Waylander?
Dragon Age: The Dread Wolf Rises
Presented during The Game Awards 2018, Dragon Age: The Dread Wolf Rises is currently in the works at BioWare. There are currently no details or even an estimated release date, but considering Bioware’s list of titles, the romances are more than likely.
As comes from the name, the events of the game will follow those of Dragon Age: Inquisition and will feature Solas, one of Inquisition’s companions. According to Kotaku, one of the early prototypes of the game had players assume the role of an agent in Tevinter Imperium. It is unknown if it stays true for the reboot.
Baldur’s Gate III
Gather your party for a tale of fellowship and betrayal, sacrifice and survival, and the lure of absolute power. Abducted, infected, lost… You are turning into a monster, drawn from a Mind Flayer parasite planted in your brain, but as the corruption inside you grows, so too does your power. That power may help you to survive, but there will be a price to pay. More than any ability, the bonds of trust that you build within your party could be your greatest strength. Caught in a conflict between devils, deities, and sinister otherworldly forces, you will determine the fate of the Forgotten Realms together. Resist and turn darkness against itself — or embrace corruption and become the ultimate evil.
The Next Mass Effect
During The Game Awards 2020, the developers from Bioware have pulled a sneaky one and announced the next installment into the Mass Effect universe, proudly being #1 on this very list. The team has also posted a blog post on the official site, promising a lot more in store for the Mass Effect universe.
When’s the game coming? We don’t know. What’s it going to be about? We don’t know. What galaxy is it even going to be in?! Well, we don’t really know – the trailer hints at the Milky Way, but the developers also tease Andromeda.
But we know Bioware, and because of that, we are sure that whenever and wherever the events of the game will be taking place, there will be an opportunity for romance.
Maybe, Maybe Not
I am not going to lie to you: we don’t know if there are going to be romances in the few following games, although my romance radar is tingling. So don’t take my word for granted and see for yourself once there are more details!
The Elder Scrolls VI (possibly)
Officially announced during E3 2018, The Elder Scrolls VI is still a long way away. However, knowing that it is actually coming at some point is got to be worth something, right?
We don’t actually know of TESVI will feature romances, but taking a look back at TESV and Fallout 4? It is quite likely. Get your amulets of Mara prepared and ready!
Announced at E3 2018, Starfield is Bethesda’s first new original IP in over 25 years. We don’t know anything about the upcoming game besides the fact that it is going to be a “space epic RPG” and that it is coming sooner than TESVI.
Starfield has been in development for years and will have a lot of new systems as the company’s first space-based game. However, it also “has Bethesda’s DNA in it”. Does it mean romances? Possibly so.
Avowed (possible but unlikely)
During the Xbox Games Showcase, the developers from Obsidian Entertainment (creators of Pillars of Eternity; The Outer Worlds) have been on hand to introduce a new large first-person RPG Avowed. The events of the game are set in the world of Eora, the universe of Pillars of Eternity. The team shared a short trailer that you can find below. Avowed will be coming to PC and Xbox Series X, there is no exact release date or even a release window at the current moment.
While Pillars of Eternity 2 did feature romances (and can be found far above in this list), The Outer Worlds did not (at the very least as far as the player character is concerned) despite loads of flirting. Obsidian noted the following in the terms of romances in their videogames: “Romance quests are hard and involve a lot of work”.
I can agree with that, but when done right – Garrus, Tali, Liara from Mass Effect, Triss and Yenn from The Witcher – it can be rewarding like no other type of quest. So cross your fingers along with me and let’s wait for more details about Avowed.
The Elder Scrolls Online (Maybe?)
The Elder Scrolls Online is an MMORPG by Zenimax and Bethesda. According to GameInformer, the title’s next year-long adventure, Gates of Oblivion, will be the next step to adding romance in-game.
In TESV: Skyrim, players can enter marriage with select NPCs through the ritual of Mara. The MMORPG features a similar rite but so far it can only connect two players together for a bonus to experience points when the two adventure together and have their rings of Mara equipped.
Unlike its single-player counterpart, while ESO did feature returning characters, they weren’t exactly companions. But that is to change soon. And that change will bring relationships with your companions. In the beginning, it won’t be romantic ones but we shall see where that road leads us!
