Age of Empires IV Incoming, AoE 2&3 Definitive Editions Too

During Gamescom 2017, Microsoft announced that Age of Empires IV is coming. In addition, Age of Empires 2 and 3 will receive the “definitive edition” treatment!

Age of Empires IV

Viewers of the Gamescom stream were treated to an hour’s worth of memories as the devs celebrated the franchise. Most were surprised by the announcement of a fourth installment when it came at the end of the stream.

We don’t know much about what the new game is about as well as what a “definitive edition” means for 2 & 3. The one thing we do know is that Relic Entertainment is on board. These are the same folks behind wildly popular strategy titles including Company of Heroes and the Dawn of War games. For now, that’s all we know for sure.

What we can speculate about is what the definitive edition means for the older games. It’s likely that we’ll see a remake of the soundtrack as well as remastering of the graphics to provide 4K support. It goes without saying that bringing the two up to modern standards is included as well.

One thing to get the AoE party started: The Age of Empires: Definitive Edition will be released on October 19th, the series’ birthday (or close anyway!).

For now, you can enjoy the trailer, relive some old memories and look forward to the future.
