Obsidian Entertainment has revealed the next RPG in its growing stable of games. Avowed was introduced by way of a nifty cinematic trailer during yesterday’s Xbox Games Showcase. Fans of Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity series will be pleased to hear that the game is set in the same game world, though gameplay has shifted from an isometric tactical RPG to a first-person RPG similar in vein to Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. The game marks Obsidian’s first major foray since being acquired by Microsoft in 2018.
Fans of Pillars of Eternity will recognize the game’s setting in Eora and many are hopeful that the story of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire will continue considering its climactic ending. The shift in development from an isometric game to a first-person one is not unexpected. Lackluster sales of PoE2: Deadfire led Obsidian’s Josh Sawyer to say, “If we consider making another Pillars game in this style, we’re going to have to re-examine the entire format of the game.” Clearly given the first-person perspective, the company has done just that.
The fly in the ointment, however, is that fan-favorite game developer Josh Sawyer will not be involved with the project. After Deadfire, Sawyer cited fatigue and that he wanted a change. Apparently, he got his wish.
@jesawyer Hey, are you working on Avowed?

No, sorry.

The introduction doesn’t reveal anything about a release date or how long the game has been in development so here’s hoping that we’ll learn more very soon.
