Baldur’s Gate 3 Devs Discuss the Sneaky Side

Baldur's Gate 3

The Baldur’s Gate 3 team has posted a lengthy note on the game’s Steam page to discuss how both combat and stealth will function. While there is not an accompanying video, the post does feature a number of gifs to showcase some of the moves. On a sadder side note, devs also mention that the community will have to be “a bit more patient” to find out exactly when BG3 will release into early access.

Because the game is based on the D&D 5th Edition rules and is class-based. It features “fluid combat despite being turn-based”. This allows players to have an authentic D&D experience and gives players a chance to plan each party member’s moves. This is effective for both single- and multi-player games.

Combat features include:

  • tactical turn-based party combat
  • the order combat has been overhauled. “If multiple combatants of the same faction follow one another in the turn order, then you can simultaneously command each of them.”
  • every battle will feel different from all the others thanks to initiative rolls and its attendant RNG

Stealth is also a huge part of the game. It allows players to do fun things like shove people, sneak around, and to help position the party in advantageous locations to better facilitate the battle.

“Our stealth mechanics now also take light and darkness into account. You can be obscured or heavily obscured so that even when you are caught in the visibility cones of the enemy, you still have a chance to slip through unseen. Of course, that is if your enemies don’t have darkvision. Here’s a little table that summarizes how light, darkness and darkvision affect stealth.”
