Belgium Examines Loot Boxes In Overwatch & Star Wars: Battlefront 2

Belgium Commission

According to Kotaku, Belgium’s Gaming Commission is in the process of taking a closer look at loot boxes in video games, including Blizzard’s Overwatch and EA’s Star Wars: Battlefront 2.

Peter Naessens, General Director of the commission, says that the practice of buying the add-on boxes—where you don’t know what you’re paying for until you open it—may constitute gambling.

The commission feels like the loot box system can be especially dangerous to the minors (both games have 12+ rating), as they are easily influenced by the societal pressure to spend money to boost their strength. The investigation can lead to the games being taken off shelves in Belgium and the companies having to pay a fine consisting of “up to hundreds of thousands of Euros”.
