Better Than the Original: The Main from the Psychonauts 2 Preview

Sparkling humor, modern combat system, and levels with unique gameplay mechanics. On July 19, observers of gaming publications shared their first impressions of the action-platforming studio Double Fine. We’ve collected the main things from the preview.

General Impressions

Psychonauts 2 enhances every aspect of the original game, including platforming, combat, and level design, which continually surprises with fresh ideas, wrote the PCGamesN columnist. After Psychonauts 2, the first part feels like an early access version. This sometimes happens to new games but, at the same time, the best roulette sites, for example, never offer games of low quality.

According to TheGamer columnist George Foster, he was worried that a sequel to one of his favorite games would be disappointing. However, after spending more than six hours in Psychonauts 2, it became clear that there was nothing to worry about.

The sequel from Double Fine conveys the same magic as the classic one from 2005, while significantly improving aspects of the game that have not survived very well over time, such as somewhat floaty platforming and an overly simple combat system.

Kotaku author Zak Zwiesen stated that he passed two of the four levels available in the preliminary version, after which he stopped playing. According to him, they impressed him so much with their fit with the Psychonauts style that he decided not to spoil himself with the full game.

Plot and Humor

Psychonauts 2 continues the story of the VR adventure Psychonauts In The Rhombus of Ruin, which, in turn, takes place after the end of the first part. After the first launch, the game shows a video that briefly retells the events of the previous parts.

Psychonauts 2 sets itself apart from other 3D platformers such as Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart in its focus on storytelling. This manifests itself in a variety of dialogues and pronounced, memorable characters, including minor ones.

Each NPC can share an interesting story, often accompanied by detailed dialogues. The game has many witty jokes that are traditional for Double Fine games. George Foster admitted that he constantly laughed at the puns and well-aimed jokes of the characters and at some moments he laughed out loud.

Gameplay

As in the first part, the main events take place in the minds of people, where the protagonist Raz penetrates. Getting into the heads of other characters, he completes tasks and fights various monsters, including those familiar from the original game, for example, censors.

Fights with enemies in close combat can sometimes seem chaotic but the developers complemented the basic attacks with Raz skills, such as firing mental projectiles or telekinesis, which reviewers have compared to similar mechanics in Control. Thanks to this, it turned out to achieve the desired variety during the battle. Double Fine made sure that all of Raz’s combat abilities remain relevant throughout the game.
