The Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 launch crashed into the cloud with log-in queues, loading times, and in game glitches.
Looks like there’s going to be some turbulence for virtual pilots. Last night’s launch of the hotly anticipated update in the Microsoft Flight Simulator series did not go well last night. Players booting up and expecting to see the title take off were met with huge delays, queues, and generally poor performance all around/ Social media has been up in arms about the ongoing issues, which are largely down to capacity issues in Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure.
Users attempting to load into the newest flight title have reported a raft of problems. Log in queues of more than 5 hours seem common. In addition, the game load time is expected to be in excess of an hour, with that probably being longer after all these issues. PC owners have also noted that this extended wait also appears to be running their systems and associated GPUs hot, and if they manage to navigate all of this turbulence, then further stalls appear to be happening during the game load too. Even after getting in, players who have crashed out also highlighted issues with in game assets and session persistence, meaning a return to the multi-hour queue.
While Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 was expected to be a big budget update to the high-altitude plane sim, the issues seem to be down to unexpected demand. Much like the Wayfinder Early Access launch, the massive influx of player requests overwhelmed the online infrastructure behind the game. Microsoft detailed the details around the caching issues caused by this in a developer stream, which you can watch below.
