Catfish TROLLS – The Dark Side of Twitch Exposed on MTV

Have you been a fan of Catfish MTV  hosted by Yaniv “Nev” Schulman and Max Jospeh throughout any of their seasons? I have been!

I’ve watched every episode, every show that runs off it and every after show so when the news of Nev Schulman blew across my twitter feed that Catfish Season 7 was put on hold while allegations of sexual harassment against Nev were being investigated I felt like a friend had been thrown into prison without a key! My belly was in knots for him, his family and loved ones. Of course those reports game back not credible which had me whooping in my lounge room for the continuance of an MTV series that is a staple in our household! Not long after I got a double whammy of news, there is a new Catfish in town and this show is called Catfish Trolls.

WHATS SO A-LURE-ING ABOUT CATFISH?

Let me give you a brief overview of what both shows entail as they are similar to a point.

Someone writes in unsure about someone they have connected with online. Now we’re not just talking a few weeks, a day or two – we are talking up to years recalling a 15 year old who was now 24, or the folks about to move across the country to meet someone they’ve never seen on a cam or even talked to voice to voice. Urban Dictionary explains:

“Someone who pretends to be someone else, especially on the internet. Found on anywhere from instagram to twitter to chat sites, these people use fake pictures to disguise who they are. A synonym for this in some situations may be “troll” because the majority of catfish out there are simply out to troll others, while others have their own reasons for this approach. Often catfish, once discovered, are faced with people full of annoyance and frustration at being catfished”

Now, I wasn’t born yesterday, I have no doubt these stories are a little staged to ensure success. I also would not be surprised if it’s the catfish themselves who write in not the catfished, spearheading an investigation by MTV producers who hand it over so Nev & Max can play cyber sleuths. Over the years it also hasn’t been too complicated to see that the show itself can only go on for so long as scenarios only have three ways they can go. Good, bad or really bad. With a plethora of co-hosts over the years who have a footprint in social media via diversity, music or other popular means we aren’t surprised to see Season 7 center often around Nev and his wife Laura Pergola that will no doubt be the beginning of  an evolving new path for them as Max  keeps being his silver haired, film directing, charming self.

What keeps me hooked though is how oblivious folks choose to be in the name of love. Its almost like watching someone rollerblading toward a pole. When they hit it you feel so bad because it must hurt yet your strangely amused they even kept going that way – but I digress…

After 6 full seasons and 2 episodes into season 7 the height of obliviousness already reached seems hard to surpass.

ENTER CATFISH TROLLS

Hosted and produced by iheart radio hip hop “the breakfast club” host Charlamagne Tha God. Co-hosted by ex Google employee who grew Youtube and current social media entrepreneur Raymond Braun. Both have a long list of accolades, both have a their fingers on the pulse of today’s hippest movements and beats. Both have a large sense of personable personality and responsibility for online behavior and being fair to each other.

Their roles are similar to the Catfish show however they are not looking for happy-ever-after’s, Catfish Trolls is giving folks the chance to confront people who are harassing them anonymously online, until now. First up the series dives straight it the gaming world of Twitch.

MISS MIAROSE AND MALDIVA

Hopefully you can watch Catfish Trolls wherever you are as this is something every avid gamer is aware of. Where a gamer (in this case MissMiaRose) is constantly flamed by the same person. What’s different about this is that it’s on streaming platform Twitch where a Twitch streamer is constantly attacked by the same person sabotaging her live stream. The person attacking her is another Twitch streamer.

You need to watch it yourself if you can and let us know your thoughts in comments as they meet and face each other, to his surprise.

I won’t say too much as this would involve spoilers but what I do have to say is if you are being harassed on any platform, most of all Twitch. Where someone is constantly in your chat purposely abusing you please use the platforms tools and block them. If it continues via other users, block them also then report the scenario to Twitch as that kind of behavior needs to stop.
