CD Projekt Red Announce A New Witcher Game

CD Projekt Red just announced that the studio has started development on a new Witcher title using the Unreal 5 Engine.

Monsters everywhere beware. The Witchers may be few but they are not dead yet. CD Projekt Red has just confirmed that the Witcher franchise is set to get another entry with a brand new Witcher game. The news dropped via the Cyberpunk 2077 developer last night and we know at least a little about the upcoming title.

Alongside the news that a new game will arrive sometime in the future, a teaser image also landed. The header that you can see above features a medallion with the text “A New saga Begins”. While that doesn’t tell anything significant I’m willing to dip into speculation and assume that this means Geralt will not be returning to the franchise.

This potential new beginning for the monster-hunting series also marks a move over to the Unreal 5 engine. CD Projekt Red has, until now, used a proprietary in-house engine. Confirming some of the reasons that this makes sense, CTO Pawel Zawdodny stated:

“One of the core aspects of our internal RED 2.0 Transformation is a much stronger focus on technology, and our cooperation with Epic Games is based on this principle. From the outset, we did not consider a typical licensing arrangement; both we and Epic see this as a long-term, fulfilling tech partnership. It is vital for CD PROJEKT RED to have the technical direction of our next game decided from the earliest possible phase as; in the past, we spent a lot of resources and energy to evolve and adapt REDengine with every subsequent game release. This cooperation is so exciting, because it will elevate development predictability and efficiency, while simultaneously granting us access to cutting-edge game development tools. I can’t wait for the great games we’re going to create using Unreal Engine 5!”

With that in mind, we can expect some glorious new monsters when the latest in this iconic RPG series lands.
