Cyberpunk 2077 Will Be Mostly First-Person PoV

Cyberpunk 2077 First-person shooter RPG

Ever since the game’s debut at E3 2018, Cyberpunk 2077 has been a hot topic in the gaming community. Recently, it became known that Cyberpunk will mostly be played as a first-person shooter, and the community’s opinions on the matter have split.

For the audience that is coming from the other CD Projekt RED’s title, The Witcher 3, it might be a hard switch as the game allowed to see the character as well as what is happening around Geralt.

On the other hand, it can be noted that first-person perspective allows for deeper immersion and lends itself better to a shooter genre. Unlike the Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077 will have a lot of its events happening in the narrow urban areas of the Night City.

Peter Gelencser, the lead level designer of Cyberpunk 2077, explained the philosophy behind the change:

“First and foremost, I really enjoy all the attention the subject is getting, because it is important. This has been an educated decision. The first-person point of view is there so you can see things happening up close, and so you can really interact with things in a visceral manner with the game world. It worked out well with our exploration of the genre.

Third-person works well in games like the Witcher when you have a lot of motion and movement around you, But when all the things happen to you, from you, within you, the first-person point of view is the right decision to take, especially because of the augmentations”.

What is your take on the topic? Do you prefer the first-person or the third-person? And if so, will be a deal breaker to you or you don’t care either way?

  1. Personally, I prefer third-person PoV, because I like to see my character and space around ’em. However, as long as the game is decent, it doesn’t matter to me all that much.

    • Agreed Catherine. I am actually a big fan of 1st person in certain games. I understand CPR’s decision in creating a more immersive experience and if they feel confident that first person is the way to go then I trust them in that regard.
