Diablo 3 is now part of Blizzard’s “classic games” queue

Diablo 3

It appears that 2012’s Diablo 3 is now considered a “classic” game at Blizzard Entertainment. The news comes from a listing on the company’s official site that seeks a Senior Software Engineer and mentions D3. One of the responsibilities also mentions Starcraft and Warcraft, classic games already on the list. This is the first time that any mention has been made of D3 in that august company.

Up to the inclusion of D3, the games considered “classics” were made in the early 2000s. This includes 1998’s Starcraft and 2002’s Warcraft 3. Oddly, Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty is older than D3 by two years but is not on the classic list. This could be due to its still-active esports attraction.

While there is no way of knowing definitively, it is possible that placing D3 on the classic list is a precursor to big news about Diablo 4. After last year’s disappointing reveal of Diablo Immortal for mobile devices, fans are hopeful that this year will see D4 officially announced. We should know much more in about a month when BlizzCon 2019 begins.
