Most of us would love to see a legit Star Wars space sim / shooter type game and if Double Damage had had its way in 2016, we would probably already have it.
According to Travis Baldtree, one of the original founders of Torchlight’s Runic Studios, it could have been a thing if EA had taken the bait.
“This was back in 2016, and we pitched a modernized take on X-Wing with all the classic bits”, Baldree told Kotaku. “It was a long-shot, and we had near-nil hopes that it would be seriously considered, but we probably did it to please ourselves rather than out of any hope that it would get greenlit.”
The game was designed to be a campaign-styled adventure, but one meant to bring the X-Wing formula to a new generation. Players would have been able to customize ships and pilots and mission progress would have been based on both auto-save and “quick save” at any point in the mission. This would alleviate losing all progress on long missions as players of earlier games did.
The video was put together as a sales pitch to EA and “cobbled together from a variety of sources”.
Sadly, EA didn’t take Double Damage’s bait and so we’re still left waiting for X-Wing for a new generation.
We’re not crying, you are!
