EA Honors John Madden After His Passing Announced

John Madden

John Madden was one of the most honored NFL coaches in history who reinvented himself as a sports commentator and the “father” of one of the most successful video game franchises ever made. EA has been the publisher of the Madden NFL series since its inception over 33 years ago. Madden’s family announced the passing of this modern American icon yesterday. John Madden was 85 years old.

As expected, tributes to the man came from many corners of the social media world including players, former players, colleagues, and from EA Sports that said, “Today we lost a hero. John Madden was synonymous with the sport of football for more than 50 years. His knowledge of the game was second only to his love for it, and his appreciation for everyone that ever stepped on the gridiron. A humble champion, a willing teacher, and a forever coach. Our hearts and sympathies go out to John’s family, friends, and millions of fans. He will be greatly missed, always remembered, and never forgotten.”

Madden became the face of the NFL game series after a deal with then-superstar John Elway of the Denver Broncos fell through. Over the years, John Madden’s association with EA Sports has earned him a cool $3M a year for the use of his likeness and name.

Our thoughts go out to Madden’s family as this is truly the end of an era for the NFL. It will remain to be seen if Madden’s name/image will still be the headliner for the EA game series.
