Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, the latest major update to the space-faring title from Frontier, just got off the launch platform on 19th May but it seems the review bombs are busy docking on Steam.
After the latest update to the massively successful Elite Dangerous launched, we were all expecting a new dimension to his adventure. Elite Dangerous: Odyssey promised commanders the opportunity to go beyond the cockpit, with planetary exploration long before competitors like Star Citizen even get out the gate. Unfortunately, initial reports are coming in that Odyssey might be in for a turbulent start. Reports of poor performance, crashing, and bugged questlines are just a few of the problems cited as owners of this expansion have started venting on the matter.
As of right now, the Steam Store Page shows over 3000 reviews, aggregating at a response of ‘Mostly Negative’. Scroll down the list and you’ll find even the positive reviews prefaced with lines like:
“I want to preface this review by saying that the negative reviews are justified. The performance is… not great, even after applying fixes that the community has discovered” – Shooterism (Steam Review)
These complaints seem to be replicated on the official forum, with a similar set of complaints. While there’s not been much input from Frontier regarding the performance problems facing players, the community has some unofficial fixes available to anybody who can’t quite hit an acceptable speed. We can’t vouch for their effectiveness but you can always re install.
When we first looked at Elite Dangerous: Odyssey during Alpha, we called it “a great first step in bring FPS fighting to a space MMO”. Now the expansion that puts players feet on the ground and allows them to explore the universe in a brand new FPS mode might require some polish before it lands on console this fall. Keep track of the situation over on the official Elite Dangerous forums.
