Faeland – Square Enix Collective Indie Hits Kickstarter

Faeland

Faeland is a new Metroidvania Action Adventure RPG on Kickstarter. The game is pretty, touting a solid classic design, but this is more than just another retro platformer. Faeland is the passion project of Carlos Gonzales who began developing the project in 2013 and subsequently founded Talegames. Since then the team has grown to 8 people including dedicated sound engineers, a pixel artist, and a content writer. They want to bring back the platforming action-adventure RPG genre experience and reinvigorate it.

The project first went through the Square Enix Collective which is an effort by the mega-publisher to support independent and community-driven development. Gamers present their ideas and concepts to the community which votes whether they want to see the game made. Square Enix helps these indie devs setup crowdfunding campaigns and organize the projects for success. In the case of Faeland, Collective members voted an overwhelming 93% in favor of Square Enix supporting the project going forward.

Faeland is an action platformer that looks to meld design tropes from classic 8 and 16-bit games on early consoles. In Faeland you’ll explore an open world, which makes me wonder if it will have that early Zelda feel of exploring zones and dungeons in a wide open map. You’ll travel from town to town talking to the inhabitants, learn the lore of the world, and sell your loot for piles of gold to fund your adventures and equipment. You will travel through dark forests, deep dungeons, and lofty castle towers on your adventures. As you gain experience you’ll gain new powers and skills to take on new challenges.

The human kingdom has lived in peace for hundreds of years keeping dark forces and brutal monsters outside its borders. Our protagonist Sam is a skilled hunter living a secluded life in the forest until it’s torn apart by a raiding party of orcs and trolls. This catastrophic event sends our unwitting hero on a series of adventures bigger than he could have ever imagined.

Art

The graphics are detailed and handmade pixel art using an “enhanced 16-Bit” that exposes wide color palettes, widescreen resolutions, and fluid animations. The art samples on the Kickstarter page are reminiscent of other classic high production pixel graphics with a unique character and flavor.faeland art

The Kickstarter campaign has 24 days left to go and has reached nearly $20,000 of it’s $29,000 goal. Initially scoped for PC, Mac, and Linux with full controller support, the team would also like to bring the game to Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch if the crowdfunding stretch goals are successful. You can find more information out on their campaign on their Kickstarter page or Twitter Feed. Let us know what you think.
