The Operator is an ingenious mystery that melds X Files inspiration with complex puzzles, and it’s out now.
If you’re coming down off the end of Evo, missing the Tennocon floor, or done capturing a castle in the Throne & Liberty Beta, then try something entirely different this week. The Operator is a brand new thriller out of indie outfit Bureau 81, and its enthralling mix of case’s has jumped up the Steam Charts.
Available right now across GoG and the aforementioned storefront, this mysterious new adventure will set you back ($13.99, £11.79, €13.79, or local equivalent. Putting players in the role of a newly hired member of the FDI agency, it provides a wealth of mysteries, crimes, and puzzles that must be solved. Far from being a traditional point and click, each new Operator must utilize cutting-edge software to piece together clues that will eventually lead them on the hunt for a most-wanted cyber criminal, known as HAL. Using tools like a Video and Photo Analyzer, Citizen and Vehicle Database, ChemScan, Notepad, and fully functional computer console each mystery eventually unravels, and a complex narrative unfolds.
That might not sound entirely appealing at first, but player reviews are already very positive. Thanks to a conspiracy fuelled tale, some unexpected twists, and an aesthetic that defiantly leans hard into Control and the X Files, this is a refreshing mystery that is worth a look.
