On August 20, PlayStation 5 and PC gamers will be treated to what’s being hailed as China’s first major triple-A game outing. Created by Game Science, Black Myth: Wukong has generated a tremendous amount of hype over the last four years – dating back to the impressive pre-alpha gameplay showcased on August 20, 2020. With not long to go until the big launch, the developers have sent out one more trailer to get fans excited for the new game. Including never-before-seen footage of combat, bosses, transformations, and cut scenes, the ‘Final Trailer’ is certainly very convincing if you’re not already on board for the soulslike action RPG.
Bosses and transformations revealed before launch
One of the main points of interest in this ‘Final Trailer’ for Black Myth: Wukong is what looks to be an appearance from the Four Heavenly Kings. In the video, they’re shown along with other previous reveals, like Tiger Vanguard, as well as a whole host of other mythic characters and bosses. Then, there are the extra transformations.
The early footage showed you transform from Sun Wukong into a bug to fly around the map. Here, you get to see some crafty sneaking transformations. The Destined One transforms into a plant so that a colossus of a foe doesn’t spot them, and later, they flip into a snow fox to make their way through the forest. On top of all of this, the footage comes with a stellar backing track that hopefully emulates the soundtrack of the game in those big moments.
Beloved story underpinning the action
In the game, you’ll play as the Destined One, who’s very much inspired by or derived from Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, in Wu Cheng’en’s novel Journey to the West. The 16th-century tale drew from Chinese folklore and mythology while also incorporating elements of Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
It’s a timeless tale that’s since been the inspiration for many other entertainment adaptations, particularly because of instantly recognizable characters like the Monkey King and Pig. You can see its continued influence from the big screen to the world of slots at crypto casinos.
Legendary Monkey King, Monkey Pop, Monkey Warrior, Monkey’s Journey, and Monkey: Battle for the Scrolls are all very much Journey to the West games. The story is so iconic and has even been hailed as one of the most influential novels of all time – even when it comes to literature on the other side of the world.
Given the charisma and power of the Monkey King, it makes sense for China’s first major triple-A effort to put them front and center. Throughout the game, you’ll embark on a similar journey to Sun Wukong in the novel, but with all of the extra trappings of a soulslike game.
Powers of transformation and the ability to command the elements get coupled with their sublime combat prowess, letting you meet and greet and often beat a whole host of creatures inspired by those found in Journey to the West and in further writings of Chinese mythology.
Black Myth: Wukong and its combat-heavy retelling of the legendary Journey to the West isn’t far now, and the ‘Final Trailer’ has only stoked the flames of excitement further.
