As if 2020 wasn’t enough of a disaster, you can prepare for doomsday as 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim brings Kaiju combat to Western Shores on PlayStation 4 next month.
Due to hit the Sony platform on 22 September, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a western port of the successful genre splicing title. Published by Atlus, of Persona fame, and developed by Vanillaware, this clash of mechanised steel and organic monsters thrusts players into a range of 13 intertwining stories and top-top tactical combat scenarios.
Originally released back in 2019 in japan, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim scored a number of awards and it is understandable why. While the scenario might sound like something any generic JRPG might setup, the execution is something special, it seems. Looking like something more akin to War of the World than a classic monster movie, the Doomsday trailer above gives players a glimpse of three very distinct timelines. Split between the 1980s Showa period, World War II Japan, and the distant future, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim follows the fate of 13 characters as they are dragged form a life of normality into a war with invading alien forces.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim doesn’t even seem happy to just stop at 13 different intertwining narratives. The game jumps between side-scrolling 2D adventure sections and top-down real-time strategy combat. While players combat waves of incoming enemy forces they will be able to customize and combat waves of monsters as they see fit, although we don’t quite know the full extent of the customization yet. The western release of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim will come with a day one patch that adds English voice acting for the sci-fi adventure ad should definitely appeal to fans of Vanillaware’s visual style, that might be recognizable form the Dragon’s Crown series. If you are interested in piloting a mecha now the Volta-X preview event is over, head to the official 13 Sentinels website for more information before the aliens arrive on PlayStation 4.
