Gielinor Is Coming To Your Tabletop With Runescape TTRPG & Board Game - announcement banner

Jagex has just announced that the rich lore of Gielinor is coming to your tabletop as the MMORPG developer announces a set of Runescape tabletop games coming this year.

MMORPG developer, turned indie and live service publisher, Jagex and the board game engineers at Steamforged Games are set to bring the rich history of Runescape into the physical realm with a duo of dice-based adventures later this year. Runescape is set to leap from PC, Mac, and mobile into a new board game and Table Top Role Playing Game. With over 2 decades of lore behind them, Runescape and Old School Runescape have plenty of tales to draw on, and both of these new games will come packed full of familiar faces. Both titles are set to give fans of the long-running MMORPG series a fresh-but-faithful adaptation of classic quests and characters while drawing on elements that the heroes of Gielinor are familiar with.

TTRPG

D&D players looking for something completely different will get to roll first as the new TTRPG core book will arrive in stores first. Deemed to be fully compatible with the fifth edition ruleset of the world’s favorite roleplaying tabletop game, the lavishly illustrated hardback book will provide the core structure for DMs to take players on a wild ride through Runescape. Players can expect a different type of character creation, and a range of self-styled quests that are only limited by their imagination and knowledge of Gielinor.

Board game

As the TTRPG rulebook lands on store shelves, Steamforged’s upcoming Runescape Board game will appear on Kickstarter. Following on from successful launches of boxed experiences like the Monster Hunter: World board game, this crowdfunding campaign will attempt to bring Runescape into the hands of fans. Assuming it smashes the initial funding goals, it will rush one to five players through quest-based campaigns in Gielinor. Along the way, they can expect to interact with NPCs, hone and upgrade their equipment, level up skills, and cook special recipes all to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead.

After dropping the news, it’s fair to say that Jagex CEO Phil Mansell had plenty of hype for the new takes on this classic MMORPG:

After more than 21 years of being exclusively available digitally, it’s extremely exciting to be collaborating with Steamforged to create and deliver new RuneScape role-playing adventures to tabletop gamers. By launching the board game via a crowdfunding platform, Steamforged is mirroring our approach of involving the RuneScape communities in taking the game to tabletop. Given Steamforged’s experience and expertise in transforming video game experiences to tabletop, I’m sure that both RuneScape and Old School RuneScape players will be excited to get their hands on the planned miniatures to create their own adventures with other ’Scapers and board gamers.

While we don’t have any store links for you quite yet, or the full Kickstarter tier break down, the two teams bringing this project to life have a dedicated mailing list for anybody interested. You can sign up now, or head over to the official Runescape website in the interim to get to know Gielinor a little better.
