Global sales of Persona 5 have confirmed that Western audiences are hungry for quality JRPGs. Atlus and Sega have announced that P5 has shipped over 1.5 million units worldwide.
This is a huge victory for Atlus as sales in Japan since launch in September 2016 have leveled out at 500,000. Localizing such a big game has paid off.
Do global sales confirm a good game?
By all reports and judging by reviews, P5 is indeed the JRPG that players have been waiting for. While “shipped units” doesn’t mean “sold units”, it’s a good sign that people are asking for the game.
Persona 5 is the sixth game in the series. It follows the adventures of a bunch of high school students who awaken “Persona” powers and become masked vigilantes. The theme roughly follows the struggle for freedom from the confines of the world.
Heavy stuff, but popular.
