Grinding Gear has revealed the next Path of Exile free expansion called Expedition. The announcement was made during a special live stream event where developers also announced that the popular Royale Mode will be making a return to the game. Expedition will be launching on all platforms on July 23rd.
For those with short memories, Royale Mode was originally introduced into PoE back in 2018 as an April Fool’s Day joke but it became such a requested feature that developers added it in for a short time. For its return, GGG has revamped it and will bring it back for weekend play sessions.
In Expedition, players encounter the Kalguur, who have traveled to Wraeclast to follow in the footsteps of their ancient settlers and to retrieve their lost artifacts. Players are asked to help retrieve these artifacts from marked Expedition sites where the Kalguur believe their ancestors have fallen. Players must strategically place a chain of explosives across the site and detonate them in order to unearth the remains of the fallen Kalguur, who rise as an undead army that must be defeated. Careful choices of where to place explosives will yield chests that might contain ancient runed artifacts.
Expedition’s major features include:
- Artifacts can be traded with a number of new merchants, each with his or her own unique trading style
- Logbooks that can be crafted to maximize value and difficulty. These can be traded with other players and, once used, can transport players to locations the books describe. Players will place a series of explosives to unearth new bosses and rewards.
- New gems will cater to a variety of play styles including a set of 19 new Skill and Support Gems.
- The expansion “also significantly rebalances several game systems to make gameplay more challenging as well as rework the flask system to provide players with more flexibility.
