One of the most beloved games of all time is coming to virtual reality. A fan group is bringing Half Life 2 VR to life, now thanks to Steam Greenlight.
Half Life 2 celebrates its teens with VR
The game may be a teenager now, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t still a great experience. Not only will the “reborn mod” bring HL2 up to date, it will also be made to include both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
Interestingly, HL2VR has been around since 2013, well ahead of most other games. It originally worked with the Razer Hydra but was taken down when Valve introduced Rift support. While most of the team moved on, the core stayed together and added a few new folks. The result is the upcoming mod for Rift and Vive.
Here’s what you can expect from the new version of HL2VR (via RoadtoVR.com):
- HDR lighting
- overhauled effects, textures, models and maps
- “made for VR” UI
- realistic weapon interaction
- multiple VR movement methods
The very best part? It’s all FREE. You’ll still need to own a copy of Half Life 2 and Episodes 1-2 but those are easy to get. Pick up the entire package + Portal for $20.
